Last 64 – EC, Alicante

Callum Evans is having the competition of a lifetime at the European Championships in Alicante this week.

The Welsh number 1, who is now based in Eslov, Sweden, has beaten 2 top International players on route to a last 64 clash with Germany’s Ricardo Walter. In a preliminary round Callum managed to navigate past the experienced Marco Jevtovic 4/3. The Serbian was previously a top 100 ranked player plus competed at the 2012 London Olympics.

In the initial group stages, the Tonyrefail man beat Scotland’s Dalgleish and Lakatos (Hungary) to make it through. Callum joins players such as Timo Boll into the final rounds. Players such as Michael Maze, Paul Drinkhall and Kalin Kreanga have failed to make it this far, which shows the level of calibre on offer.

The Last 64 tie will take place this evening so tune in to watch it as it happens at the Arena on the sunny coast of Spain.
