European Championships

21st October 2016

Charlotte Carey reached the last 32 of the women’s doubles with Israel partner Nicole Trosman. There they played top seeds Pota (HUN)/Elkholm (SWE) which was just too tough.

The singles gave Charlotte the unfortunate draw of playing Russian defender Malanina or Russia in a pre-qualifier. After winning the first and leading considerably in the second, things were looking very good in Charlotte’s favour, but the Russian changed gameplan and came through 4-1 in the end.

This match was a result of Charlotte finishing up runner up in her fist qualification group losing to local girl Szandra Pergel 4/1 but beating Petric of Montengro 4/1 and Stuckyte of Lithuania 4/3

The mixed doubles match was an epic with Ashley Robinson of Ireland partnering Charlotte and a close fought game against the Belarus pair of Khanin & Trigolos losing 14/16, 15/13, 15/13, 11/9

6 Nations Vets

27th September 2016

Once again the Welsh Veterans went into competition against England, Ireland, Scotland, Isle of Man and Guernsey, this year in Ellesmere Port in England.

This year’s elite of Welsh Veterans were represented by

Steve Buck, Neil Wright, Dave Buck, Lee Thomas, Tony Collins, Mark Pugh, David Lloyd, Roger Grech, Paul Collins, John Thomas, Glyn Kellow, Roger Thomas, Dennis Bromage, John Spencer, Regina Grech, Marilyn Morgan, Christine Watkins, Kath Mitchell Dawson, Judith Whitton, Lesley Keast and Steve Eades.

The team did not disappoint bringing home a hatful of medals once again.

In the team event Regina Grech and Lesley Keast winning the ladies 50s Gold was a fantastic result beating both England A and B in the process. The skill and craft of Regina is like watching a world class chess player in action she outplayed and out thought everyone in her way. Lesley was full of energy and passion smashing everyone in her way with her tremendous top spins and attacking play. Watching them both made me realise how lucky we are in Wales to have these ambassadors promoting our sport at the top level of Veterans table tennis. We also picked up a hatful of team medals.

The men’s 40s team of Neil Wright, Steve Buck, Lee Thomas and Dave Buck winning Bronze.

The 50s Men team of Steve Eades, Tony Collins, David Lloyd and Mark Pugh winning Bronze, as well as the 70s men’s team of John Spencer, Dennis Bromage and Roger Thomas also obtaining Bronze.

The 60s mixed team off Glyn Kellow, John Thomas, Paul Collins, Roger Grech, Christine Watkins and Kath Mitchell Dawson putting up a powerful attempt to pinch third but just falling short at the last hurdle.  It is worth mentioning that John Thomas playing in his first six nations did not lose a match.

The 40s ladies of Marilyn Morgan and Judith Whitton were involved in some wonderful table tennis but just fell short of obtaining a medal. I was pleased to have a chat with Judith afterwards as this was her first six nation’s event and she said she had enjoyed herself over the weekend and thought the standard of table tennis was very high.

In the singles event on the Sunday which are usually dominated by England we broke the expected array of titles going to England with both David Buck and Regina Grech putting in great performances to obtain Gold.  I would like to mention the support provided to Regina by John Spencer through the rounds as John had retired from the Sunday event but stayed at the request of Regina to assist with coaching and advice while Regina came through some tough matches.

I would say that John Spencer’s attitude typified the attitude of the whole Welsh Group in that everyone stayed to support the Welsh players who were involved in the later rounds of the completion.

Those of you who know David Buck would only ever see a hard driven person with only one thing on his mind perfection on a table tennis table. This guy was like a gladiator on the day beating both the England No: 1 on his way to beating the Ireland no: 1 in the final and was brought to tears due to the emotion of winning for Wales. I must add that like Regina’s singles win these results are not to be taken likely as England, Ireland and Scotland are ranked in the ITTF higher than Wales and to beat their best is significant. I was going to say this does not happen very often which is true in the Men’s event, but not in Regina’s case as she just keeps beating everyone year on year what a player.

There was also a significant effort in the ladies 60s doubles by Kath Mitchell Dawson and Christine Watkins who obtained Silver which was a great effort and both players played with pride and passion to get past the earlier rounds.

In the consolation singles there were silver medals for Neil Wright, Judith Whitton and Steve Eades.

I must admit as the Delegate it was my great pleasure to lead the team and see the pride and passion demonstrated in the arena for the TTAW and the Welsh flag.

Everyone was a credit to the game they play and made Wales as a Nation proud and once again made everyone recognise how strong Welsh Veterans Table tennis has become in Wales.

I hope to see everyone at this year’s team championship for Wales, the National championships and our first International veteran’s Open event in April. All of these events will go toward selecting the best players to represent Wales in Guernsey in 2017 so please enter

Jenkins and Sibley are Grand Prix series champs

Author: Paul Stimpson
Publish date: June 5, 2016

Video Men’s Final – https://youtu.be/EEvTc9Xy3x4

Chris Doran won on the day, but beaten finalist Ryan Jenkins is the 2016 Grand Prix series champion.

Doran gathered momentum in the later stages of the season-finale in Redbridge after inflicting defeat on the second seed Loic Bobillier – who won all 19 British League matches he played for B-BAT in 2011-12.

And he was on top form to defeat Jenkins three straight in the final – the Welshman having the sizeable consolation of his eighth overall title in the last 15 years.

The women’s singles was an all-Hungary affair in the final as Melinda Ciurcui beat Edina Toth in four.

The overall title went to Kelly Sibley, who was not competing in London but had built up enough points to be assured of the crown for the first time.

Her nearest challenger and overall winner in the last three seasons, Karina Le Fevre, was beaten in the semis by Ciurcui.

Men’s Singles

Arguably the strongest field at a Grand Prix in recent memory produced a high-quality competition.

Raiders from France, Hungary and Poland featured in the upper reaches of the seedings and duly reached the latter stages, but the last four had a familiar feel with Ryan Jenkins, Chris Doran and Gavin Rumgay all present.

The exception was Poland’s Artur Daniel, who came in as a scratch entry when Tom Jarvis pulled out, with GCSEs imminent this week.

Jenkins was always ahead of Daniel in his semi, winning it 11-9, 12-10, 11-5.

It meant the final would be a familiar affair, as Jenkins faced Doran, who came from a set down to beat Rumgay 3-1 (10-12, 11-7, 11-6, 11-8).

The scoreline was not familiar though as Doran turned in a supreme performance. His was the irresistible force but Jenkins could not play the role of immovable object – though of course he had his moment – as Doran romped it 5, 6, 5.

In all, Doran played nine matches to win the title, against players of eight different nationalities – Jersey, England, Italy, Hong Kong, France (2), Korea, Scotland and Wales.

Overall, Doran’s performance took him above Tom Jarvis into second place in the standings, but Jenkins was more than 100 points clear at the top.

Early rounds

In the quarters, Jenkins had ended the interest of Hungary’s Attila Koszo – and his vociferous supporters – though he was taken to four, losing the third game 13-15 having dumped a serve into the net on his only match point of the set.

Daniel saw off Darius Knight in five in a match which drew a decent crowd, pulling away only at the end of the decider to win it 11-9, 7-11, 12-10, 13-15, 11-7.

Doran brushed aside Bobillier 9, 9, 2, while Rumgay was too good for youngster Olly Tyndall, winning it 1, 6, 3. It was a good day for Tyndall nonetheless as he beat No 5 seed Fatah Ourahmoune 3-2 (6-11, 11-6, 13-11, 8-11, 11-5) in the last 16.

Jenkins’ path to the quarters saw him defeat Ryan Collins, Gabriel Achampong and Sean Doherty, all in three straight.

Koszo ended the run of Shaquille Webb-Dixon in the last 16 – the Grantham youngster had earlier defeated Ismaila Akindiya in four.

Daniel dropped games against Emmanuele Delsante and Craig Bryant on his way to the last eight, while Knight was untroubled in the knockouts up to that point.

Rumgay looked in superb form on his way to the last eight, seeing off Bradley Tuttle (3, 8, 4), Christoph Zickert (6, 7, 7) and Mike O’Driscoll (7, 4, 6).

Doran was taken the distance by Ryota Kawai in the last 16 before prevailing 3-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-3, 11-6. Kawai had himself earlier beaten Alim Hirji in five.

Bobillier went through his first three knockout rounds without dropping a game, beating Adam Nutland 7, 9, 9 in the last 16.

Welsh National Championships 2016

Ryan Jenkins won his 12th Men’s title without dropping a single set, whilst Charlotte Carey won back her title she lost last year to Chloe Thomas.

With Chloe unable to attend and defend her crown, it was up to Charlotte not to lose her focus and beat all those put before her, which she did professionally. A final with Beth Roberts was what the crowd got to witness and the 2014 winner never looked back winning 3-0. Carlotte beat the junior champion, Beth Richards in one semi final with Beth beating Kate Roberts in the other half of the draw.

The men’s singles had 3 young stars joining 37 year old Ryan in the semis. Ryan Oyler beat defending champ Dan O’Connel in their QF battle, whilst Chris Griffiths beat Dean Cundy in another. Callum Evans took down Mike Marsden with Ryan Jenkins beating Wiktor Dzwonkowski in the final QF.

Oyler couldn’t scale the heights in the SF losing 0-3 to Jenkins. Callum Evans beat Chris Griffiths in their semi 3/1 to reach yet another final. Ryan was a little too strong for the Tonyrefail youngster, but it may be 3rd time lucky next year.

Callum won both the U21 and U18 singles though, so it was not all bad news for the player who is based in Grantham College during term time. Callum beat Chris Griffiths 3/1 in the final (U21) and Josh Stacey in the U18 final 3/0.

Charlotte made it a double as she beat Beth again in a replay of the women’s final. This time it was 3-1 (11/4, 11/9, 7/11, 11/8).

Lee Thomas succesfully defended his Over 40’s crown with a nice 3/0 against Ray Goulding (12/10, 11/8, 11/4). Ray did win the over 60 singles though, beating Chris Richards in the final match.

Mark Simon won the O50 singles beating Steve Eades in the final 11/6, 11/6, 11/8.

The Men’s Doubles was won by father and son combination in Ryan and Jac Jenkins. They beat Chris Griffiths and Callum Evans in the final 3/1. Steve Hall and Neil Wright combined to beat Steve Eades and Mark Simon in the Vets doubles final 3/0. Charlotte Carey teamed with Dan O’Connell to add the National title to the Blackpool GP title they won a few weeks back. They beat Kate Roberts and Mike Marsden 12/10, 11/1, 11/5 in the final. Charlotte teamed up with Catherine Jones for the women’s doubles title. After training 1-9 in the 4th set it looked all over but they clawed it back to eventually win it 11/7, 4/11, 7/11, 11/9, 13/15!!!!

The junior Boys doubles was won with a brother combination in Callum and Louie Evans. They beat Lawrence John and Marc Castro in the final 3/2.

Joseph Roberts beat Louie Evans to claim the U13 Welsh title beating Louie Evans 11/5 in the final set.

Kate Roberts avenged her defeat to Bethany Brewer in the April Masters event to retain the title she won in 2015 winning 11/8, 13/11, 11/7 in a great final.

Cade Short looked down and out against Benedict Watson but the Bridgend man found a way past in the end to win 3/2 and secure yet another Welsh national cadet championship.

Beth Richards fought hard to secure her first National title beating defending holder Lydia John in the SF and then Lara Whitton in the final 11/8 in the 4th set.

Lara did taste success in the U13 girls event as she won the round robin beating Lauren Stacey in the final game 3/1.

Youngster Evan O’Connor claimed the U11 title with a round robin victory of his own

Linz Open, Austria

14th April 2016

Lydia and Lawrence John competed at the event in Linz, it was a great experience for both Welsh players.

Lawrence teamed up with James Chappell and progressed through the first round beating both teams in their group 3-0. The next round proved more difficult with the boys losing by narrow margins which resulted in them playing for positions 13-20. They won their next 2 games and finished 13th out of 31 teams. In the singles, Lawrence had a difficult group losing 3-2, 3-1, 3-1, so was out of the main draw. He won his next 2 games 3-0 but was knocked out by a Norwegian in a tight 3-2 match.

Glamorgan Open

20th March 2016

Number 1 seed Daniel O’Connell had to settle for runners up spot as rival and team mate Callum Evans won both the Open singles and the Junior singles today in Cardiff.

It was a re-match of the 2015 Welsh men’s final, where Dan was the king, today Callum took revenge and send a strong signal to all the opponents ready for the Welsh Nationals in May that he is the one to beat. Callum took the final 3/1 and the £200 cash prize.

In the junior final Callum beat Josh Stacey 3/1 after Josh made a comeback after 0/2 and 0/6 in the 3rd set. Josh won that 11/7 but lost the next with Callum making up for the slip.

Earlier in the day Joseph Roberts beat all the field in the U13 singles where his final opponents was Bristol’s Louis Price. It was a master class from the Cardiff boy as he won quite comfortably 3/1 in front of the home crowd that gathered around court 1.

Benedict Watson was the other winner of the day claiming the cadet title, where he beat Louie Evans in the final. Both have just returned from Italy where they were team mates, but there was no team mates today as the U15 rivals went head to head for the £75 prize.

Thanks to Dai Treharne for support the prizes on offer for the winners and runners up

Day 2

Louie Evans has reached the QF of the Hopes singles with 2 wins in the group against Czech and Italian opposition. He beat the Czech player 3/11, 11/4, 7/11, 11/6, 11/8 and the Italian 11/8, 11/7, 11/7. Louie had a bye in the last 16 round to make the QF stage where he plays a winner of the previous round.

Lara competed in girls Hopes event and couldn’t match Louie with 2 losses in her group. The first was a very tight affair against the Slovenian 8/11, 5/11, 11/9 8/11 and the other was another 1/3 loss vs the Italian (11/9, 7/11, 3/11, 8/11). Lara will compete in the Hopes consolation tomorrow.

The cadet Boys saw all 3 boys fail to progress with hard groups as expected. Benedict lost 0/3 (Russian), and 1/3 (San Marino) whilst Ben lost both 0/3 (Hong Kong and Poland). Louie couldn’t find a way either losing both is 0/3 (Hungary and Belarus). There was some consolation as Louie and his San Marino partner won the doubles encounter against the Belgian pair to progress to the last 16 tomorrow. Benedict and Ben lost 9/11, 8/11, 6/11 to an Italian partnership.

Lydia, Lara and Beth found it just as tough in their cadet singles groups losing their matches so were unable to progress. Lydia lost both matches 0/3 (Italian & Slovenian). Beth lost to a Japanese and Belgian (both 0/3) whilst Lara lost to a Greek and Croatian (both 0/3). Lydia and Beth enjoyed a bye into the last 16 of the doubles and will play tomorrow. Lara’s Polish partner unfortunately didn’t show up to the table at the correct time and therefore the match against the Turkish pair was recorded as a walkover.

Day 3

Louie Evans lost in his QF of the Boys Hopes in a 1/3 loss to Varone of Italy (5/11, 6/11, 11/7, 9/11) after coming back into the game after a slow start. Lara had some success in the Hopes consolation with a see-saw 3/2 win against her Italian opponent 10/12, 11/4, 3/11, 11/3, 11/8. That meant she made the Semi Final where she came up against Papadimitriou of Greece (who she lost to in the cadet singles the previous day) but couldn’t reverse that loss and went down 0/3.

The cadet girls lost in the last 16 of the doubles to Armanini & Sfameni (Italy) 10/12, 11/9, 6/11, 3/11 to end their chance of medal success and Louie and partner Mongiusti of San Marino couldn’t replicate yesterday’s win and went down to the number 6 seeds of Hungary 0/3.

This brought the competition to an end for Wales but lessons learned and plans put in place for future events.
