Cardiff Grand Prix

20-21 December

 

 

Day 1

Beth Roberts won the band 1 women’s event, which was a round robin, with wins against Nicole Hall (3/0), Hannah Lynch-Dawson (3/2) and Cherith Graham (3/1). Hannah got some revenge in the band 2 women’s with a final win against Beth (3/1) to claim that title.

The men’s ban 1 was won by Gavin Maguire (Ireland) beating Scotland’s Kenny Lindsay in the final. Lindsay, who has been to Taiwan in recent times, beat Garth Kinlocke in the semis with Maguire taking Callum Evans in their match.

Naomi Jackson came good in the band 3 singles to beat Liz May in the final. Jackson beat Ireland’s Thompson in the semi with May beating Bethany Brewer.

Callum Evans won the men’s band 2 singles with a win against Ireland’s Commonwealth player Peter Graham in the final 3/1. Carl Baldry beat Birmingham’s Jody Bevington in a thrilling band 4 final. Baldry beat Mike Browne in the semis with Bevington beating Ireland’s Ryan McConkey to reach the final.

In an all Welsh final it was Ryan Oyler who came out with the win against Jac Jenkins. Jac, the number 1 seed, beat Kin Fun Chan to reach the final with Oyler, a scratch entry, beating Dave Reeves.

Carl Baldry won his second event of the day beating Charlie Fitzgerald, who was a double runner up, to the title. Fitzgerald beat Chris Price whilst Baldry beat Ed Haskell in the respective semi finals.

Paul Karabardak claimed another title for Wales with his band 6 title against Ireland’s Charlie Fitzgerald. Paul beat Cade Short in the semi finals with Charlie beating Ed Haskell.

Day 2

Darius Knight and Hannah Hicks took the top prizes in the men’s and women’s singles respectively at Sport Wales National Centre on Sunday 21^st December. Darius beat all before him with a QF win vs Paul McCreery, a semi win vs Ryan Jenkins and in the final he beat David McBeath 3/1. McBeath beat Doran in their semi final showdown.

Hannah had a tougher draw than expected due to Chloe Thomas winning her group and defeating Charlotte Carey in the process. Charlotte therefore went into Hannah’s part of the draw and lost out in the QF. Hicks then beat Karina LeFevre and finally Chloe to secure the win. Chloe beat Beth Roberts in their half of the draw to reach the final

Callum Evans swept the field to win the U21 boys with wins against Conor Edwards, Ryan McConkey and Ryan Fellows. Fellows beat Ryan Oyler to reach the final. Hannah Lynch-Dawson won the women U21 event beating Erin Thompson in the semi and Beth Roberts in the final 3/1. Beth beat Naomi Jackson in their half.

In the Open doubles, Matt Ware and Paul McCreery took the round robin with Charlotte Carey and Gavin Maguire taking the second spot as they lost out 3/2 in their encounter

Jojo Senorin was victorious in the Veteran singles as he beat Neil Wright (2^nd), Andy Frain (3^rd), Mark Farrow (4^th), Dennis Bromage (5^th) and Jonathan Allen (6^th) to the title.

Nottingham Grand Prix

9 December 2014

 

Ryan Jenkins got back to his winnings ways on the GP circuit with a reversal of the loss he suffered to Chris Doran in Bristol a few weeks ago. Jenkins beat Doran in the final 3-1 after dropping the first end 6-11. It was Jenkins 51st GP win of his career and the Cardiff GP will be another he is setting his sights upon as its the home GP for him.

Follow Charlotte Carey at the WJC in Shanghai, China as she progresses into the knockout rounds tomorrow

 

She has already won 2 and lost 1 to finish r/up in her qualification group

Welsh Ping Pong Championships

4th December 2014

 

Congratulations to Mike Marsden who will represent Wales down in London this January for the World Ping Pong Championships to be held live on Sky Sports at Alexandra Palace

 

Mike beat former Champion Dean Cundy in the final 3/2 which was as close as it gets in each set. Mike beat Ryan Oyler with Dean pipping Nick Brown in the opposite half. See the attached knockout draw.

 

 

 

 

Blaenau Gwent Junior/Cadet Open 2014

3 December 2014

 

The 22nd Annual Blaenau Gwent Junior and Cadet Open was held at Abertillery Sports Centre on 30th November 2014.  This year’s tournament saw 44 players compete to win the titles in their respective events.

 

In the Junior boys, top seed Ryan Oyler fought off all the competition to claim the title.  In the semi finals Ryan beat Joshua Stacey 3-1, whilst Chris Griffiths came through a close match against Jac Jenkins in 4 sets.  Ryan produced a strong performance against Chris in final and won 3-0.

 

The Junior Girls was also won by the number 1 seed, Beth Roberts.  Beth overcame Lydia John 3-0 in her semi final whilst Soffi Jenkins beat English ranked Beth Atkinson in the other semi final, also 3-0.  In the final, Beth showed why she is top of the junior rankings winning in 3 sets to successfully defend the title she won last year.

 

The Cadet Boys was won by Cade Short who produced some great table tennis to upset top seed Joshua Stacey in a close final 3-1.  On his way to the title, Cade also defeated Joseph Roberts 3-0 in the semi final.  Joshua beat Benedict Watson in the other semi final, also 3-0.

 

The Cadet Girls title went to top seed Lydia John for a second successive year.  The Cadet girls was fiercely contested from the start, with one group decided by count back.  In the semi finals, Lydia beat Beth Richards 3-0, whilst Anna Hursey beat Lauren Stacey.  In the final, Lydia battled to a 3-1 victory against Anna to defend the title.

 

Also well done to Lara Whitton, who was the recipient of the Blaenau Gwent Fairplay Award.

2 bronze medals for Team Wales on the weekend in Largs
Angharad Phillips took an individual Bronze losing to Karina Le Fevre 3-2 (9-11, 11-2, 11-9, 8-11, 11-5)

Angharad joined with Nicole Hall and Kate Roberts to win the other bronze for W…ales in the women’s team event

Nicole Hall also lost to LeFevre in the QF of the individual singles 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-6)

Ryan Oyler lost out in the last 16 2-3 to Richard Main (after a 2-0 lead)

Callum Evans and Kate Roberts won the plate events for us to claim 2 gold medals for the journey back home to Cardiff

The men’s team finished 4th beating Jersey and Guernsey

A younger team and one which will grow and grow moving towards the more important senior events un to Gold Coast 2018

ITTF Swedish Open

14th November 2014

 

Charlotte Carey won 1 and lost 1 at this weeks Swedish Open in Stockholm. After beating Spanish player Escartin 4/3 it looked good for qualification to the main draw. A huge match vs Lin of Chinese Taipei stood in the way and the 0/4 loss yesterday saw the event come to an end for the Ebbw Vale player. Next up is the World Junior Championships in Shanghai in early December

 

 

 

 

Hungarian Youth Open

10 November 2014

 

Charlotte Carey lost to Bernadette Ballint of Romania in the QF of the junior girls singles at the Hungarian Youth Open in Szombatherly. After getting a chance with Match ball at 10-9 in the 7th set it looked like Charlotte was heading for the semis but it wasn’t to be. Ballint went on to win the whole event.

Charlotte, who has qualified for the World Junior Championships in China this December, is hoping a QF place here in Hungary is enough to get her a spot at the Junior World Tour Finals in Paraguay in January.

 

 

Wales junior girls (Charlotte, Soffi & Beth) lost to Germany 0/3 and Croatia 2/3 in the junior Girls team event.
Josh and Marc lost to Israel 1/3 and Belgium 0/3 in the cadet boys team whilst Lydia (partnered with a Swedish player) lost to Belgium 1/3 and Belarus 0/3 to end their run in the cadet girls event

European Youth Championships 2014 – Italy

 

Wales finishes 29th (Junior Boys Team) and 35th (Cadet boys team) at the EYC 2014 Championships held in Riva De Garde, Italy.

 

Big wins against Jersey, Lithuania, Bulgaria and Bosia saw the boys take a top 30 finish with Ryan Oyler, Callum Evans and Conor Edwards taking the wins needed.

 

The cadet boys (Jac Jenkins & Joshua Stacey) had some narrow loses to Holland, Israel and Luxembourg but beat Georgia and Ireland to show they have what it takes at this level

In the Cadets Consolation Jac Jenkins lost in the second round to Limonov from Ukraine 1-3.

In the Junior Consolation Conor lost in the second round to Kreft of Poland 1-3, whilst Ryan Oyler took a victory over Ryan Farrel of Ireland 3-0 in the second round. He then lost in the third round to Zonios of Greece 1-3.

 

 

 

 

Affiliation & Licence Fees 2014-2015

 

The affiliation fee for the forthcoming season is now £13

 

The fee for a licence is £14.50

 

 

 

Dragon eligibility

 

It has been decided that the eligibility age date for Dragon competitions will now be based upon 1 January each year. For example if a child was still 8 on 1 January 2014 then he or she will be eligible for any under 9 competitions up until 31 December 2014. This applies in similar manner to each age category

International Senior Schools 2014

30 June 2014

 

Wales won 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 5 Bronze on the weekend of the 27-29th June at Sport Wales National Centre, Cardiff

 

Ryan Oyler, Conor Edwards and the U16 Boys A team of Jac Jenkins and Ryan Oyler won the golds, with Soffi Jenkins and our U16 Boys B team (Callum Evans and Marc Castro) taking Silver.

Beth Roberts, Callum Evans, Jac Jenkins and the U14 Boys (Joshua Stacey & Joseph Roberts) and the U18 girls (Beth Roberts & Kate Roberts) took the Bronze medals

 

England, as usual in these events took home the bulk of the medals with another strong set of players on show

Cippenham Youth Festival 2014

There was a Welsh invasion at the Cippenham YF yesterday with many youngsters on show. Ael y Bryn, Blaenavon, Bridgend, Rhondda and Maesteg all had presence there, along with a team selected by Wales, who made the journey in the TTW bus.

World Championships 2014 – Japan

Day 6 at the Worlds saw Wales’ women team play Italy for finishing positions of 37-44, a good achievement which will have implications for the next team WTTC competition to be held in Kuala Lumpar Malaysia in 2016 (see off ourt news below).

 

First up against Italy was Charlotte Carey, who played a close match against Vivarelli. Unfortunately despite the close scores Italy came out on top and edged into the lead on overall match score. Next Naomi Owen showed the Italians that Wales meant business, and pulled the match score level with a dominant 3 straight win over Colantoni. Megan Phillips then played Ridolfi, starting really well but the Italian managed to turn the encounter around and it was 2-1 Italy. Charlotte then played Colantoni, however the momentum was now with Italy and despite Charlotte’s best efforts the Italians took the match 3-2.

In off court news, there has been concern over the proposal to ITTF Executive Directors to limit the number of teams allowed to enter future team WTTC. Citing problems finding organisers able to run future WTTC events as the reason for the proposal, a decision was taken by the Executive Directors at their meeting, to limit future team entry to 96 mens and 96 womens teams. With 220 countries now part of the ITTF family, this means that over half will not be able to take part. The top 44 teams finishing in Tokyo will automatically qualify, which means that the welsh women will definitely be at the WTTC Malaysia 2016. Our men will finish outside of the top 44 and so will need to qualify for a place, either through the 12 places available at the Europeans, or the additional 5 places available through ITTF World Team Rankings. Furthermore only countries who compete in their continental championships (for us the Europeans) will be eligible to qualify for WTTC Malaysia 2016. Continued participation of both welsh teams at future WTTC events is a priority for Table Tennis Wales, and the various means of qualification will be examined after this WTTC.

 

 

Wales women had a bye today, and spent the time preparing for their match against Italy 10am tomorrow.

The men played Guatemala still searching for that first elusive victory. Ryan Jenkins put the team ahead with a victory over Gatica, then, Guatemala drew level as Mike Marsden lost to Ramirez. The turning point for the welsh team came as Stephen Jenkins played Soto. Steve seemed to relax slightly when he was 2 sets down and his playing improved. He eased into the game winning the 4^th and 5^th sets easily – 2-1 overall to Wales. Ryan then seized the chance against Ramirez, a contest which went to the 5^th. Ryan made no mistakes and the Welsh men had their victory 3-1.

In their second match of the day Wales faced Cyprus. Daniel OConnell couldn’t stop the impressive Cyprus number 1 Yiangos Yiangou and Wales fell behind. Stephen Jenkins levelled with a victory over Sherafimiov, but Wales fell behind again as Conor Edwards lost to Marios Yiangou. The match then went to Cyprus as Yiangos Yiangou beat Stephen Jenkins

Wales women played Malaysia in the first session of the day, in what was always going to be a close match in this tight group. Beh of Malaysia took first blood with a victory over Naomi, but our team recovered as Charlotte Carey brought Wales level by beating Ho 3-1. Megan Phillips then had yet another close match against Lee and lost in the 5^thset. There then followed the turning point, a tense struggle between Charlotte and Beh with a Malaysian overall match win at stake. Charlotte went 1-2 down in sets, but took the 4^th 12-10 to force the matter into the 5^th set. The win in the 4^th gave her the momentum she needed to win the 5^th set, thereby bring Wales level on overall match score. With Wales back from the brink of defeat Naomi made no mistakes beating Ho 3 straight. This was a fine 3-2 win for Wales.

Wales men played Qatar in the days last session. Team selection and playing order was arranged for Mike Marsden to play defender Alhajjal, as Mike does well against a defensive style. Sure enough Mike delivered a 3 straight win to open the score board in Wales’ favour. Team mates Conor Edwards and Dan OConnell could not keep up the momentum, both losing their matches against Al Mohammadi and Al-Naggar. Mike stepped up to the plate once more against Al Mohammadi winning in the 5^th set. The overall result rested on the last encounter where Conor faced defender Alhajjal. Conor took a few sets to adjust to the playing style going 0-2 down, but came back strongly to win the 3^rd set 11-5. He was just squeezed out in the 4^th set, his opponent no doubt happy that it didn’t go to the 5^th. This meant Wales lost overall 2-3.

Off court our delegate attended the ETTU Congress. There he learned of the various performance initiatives within the ETTU for our younger players, which have been forwarded to the National Coaching Manager for his attention. His attendance also secured a say in the format of future European Table Tennis Championships.

 

 

 

 

 

Wales men played Malaysia in the second session of the day, desperate for a win to avoid the bottom of their group. A steady hand on the tiller was required, and who better than Ryan Jenkins to help steady the ship. Ryan quickly dispensed with Haiqal to set the team off to a great start. Mike Marsden then played Ibrahim and forced the issue to the 5^th set but lost out, so Malaysia levelled the overall match score. Stephen Jenkins fought out close sets with Leong, but couldn’t stop Malaysia taking the lead 2-1. Ryan then had a tough match with Ibrahim, but came through to win in the 4^th set to bring Wales level on overall match score. So the result all came down to the last encounter between Mike and Haiqal. Mike took the 1^st set, but Haiqal fought back to take the victory for Malaysia 3-2 overall

Wales women played in the 3^rd session of the day against Columbia. Charlotte Carey was first off against Paula Medina. Charlotte had close sets bt was unable to break through against the strong Columbian. Naomi Owen then levelled the overall match score with an emphatic 3 straight win over Lady Ruano. Megan Phillips battled valiantly against Cory Tellez from 2 sets down, getting to the 5^th but just losing out by 2 clear points. Wales’ fate was sealed by the difficult Medina who took the victory by beating Naomi.

Off the court Wales Delegate Neil OConnell attended the ITTF AGM along with delegates from 219 other countries. The main news from the meeting is;

Thomas Weikert will replace Adham Sharara as ITTF President from September.

The first World Table Tennis Day will be 6^th April 2015

The new plastic balls will shortly be available.

WTTC 2015 will be held in Suzhou China

WTTC 2017 provisionally awarded to Germany (subject to conditions)

ITTF are working on a future “rebound limit” for rubbers

Proposed rule changes to the service rule were not passed

Wales women put in another fine performance in the 1^st session today against Israel, taking the win 3-1. The highlights of which was another 2 victories by Naomi and Charlotte beating Nicole Trosman, who has a world ranking of 185.

Both teams then played in the 3^rd session where the women, faced Lithuania. Naomi got them off to a good start with a 3-1 win over Leva Venslaviciute. Charlotte could not hold off the super fast Ruta Paskauskiene, and whilst Megan took a set off Egle Stuckyte, Wales slipped 1-2 behind on the overall match score. Paskauskiene then finished the job by beating Naomi.

Off court, the Wales Delegate ( Neil OConnell) attended the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation AGM. The meeting focused on preparations for Glasgow 2014, and the meeting voted for Mumbai (India) to host the 2015 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships.

Argentina Youth Open & Youth Olympic Qual

Charlotte Carey won a Gold (team event) and silver (singles) at the Argentina Youth Open held in Buenos Aires last week. The Ebbw Vale star unfortunately lost out in the semi finals of the Youth Olympic Qualification event this Monday & Tuesday to Croatia’s Lea Rakovac.

 

No time to think about what if’s for Charlotte as she, and the full senior team, departs for Japan on Saturday for the World table tennis Championships in Tokyo

The weekend was a great display of the state of how Welsh table tennis is at present with wins for Nicole Hall, Jac Jenkins and Ethan Davies to name a few. Players like Lydia John, Kate Roberts, Callum Evans and Cardiff based Danielle De Jong and Hull based Reece Lo were also in action and playing to a high standard on day 1. Table Tennis Wales seeks a suitably able person to deliver a project to increase participation amongst minority ethnic communities – predominantly in the Cardiff/Newport areas

 

The person appointed will choose his/her own working arrangements and the project fee will be paid in instalments as milestone targets are achieved.

 

The initial advertisement for this project limited applications to those with UKCC qualifications – but this limitation has now been removed. Knowledge of the sport in Wales would be beneficial but is not essential. If the applicant is not a qualified coach then it may be that it will be necessary to allocate some part of the project fee to coaching costs.

 

The person appointed will need to display energy, enthusiasm and first class communication skills. He/she must be able to inspire others, to demonstrate the ability to manage the project effectively and to work in collaboration with a range of partners.

As the National Governing Body for Table Tennis in Wales we are looking for the next generation of table tennis Champions in Wales.

The new TT Wales Talent ID Camp will give us the chance to spot more talented youngsters from across Wales.

This will give us more greater opportunities to work closer with players and club coaches so we as a nation can develop a new generation of Champions.

Please find the entry forms attached for the FIRST Wales Talent ID Training Camp. We ask you as club Secretaries/Coaches to put up to two players forward for this camp which is held on Tuesday 22nd April at Sport Wales National Centre.

As we have limited spaces of 24 players we ask for you to get your entry in fast in order to book your place. It will be a first come first serve bases.

Once the club has selected their players, please pass on the Player Reply Forms for them to send to us with consent from their Parents/Guardians that they wish to attend the camp.

Michael Hawkesworth Championships – The National Championships of the BTTAD (sponsored by Butterfly/Tees Sport) ‏

The above Championships were held in Grantham over the weekend of 15th and 16th March 2014.

 

The results as follows:

 

Thomas Matthews (Class 1) won his first National Championships in Class 1/2 beating Oye Jemiyo of England 3-2.

 

Ashley Davis (Class 3) won silver in Class 3 Mens Event, losing in final to Kevin Plowman of England 3-0. A bad tempered affair! Ashley went on to win Bronze in the A Open Singles Event and Bronze in the Doubles Event with his partner Mark Palmer of England.

 

Rebekah Evans (Class 4) won Bronze in the Womens Open Event losing to Hannah Coulthurst of England in the semi-finals 3-2.

 

Joshua Morgan (Class 10) won Gold in the B Open category beating Martin Perry of Scotland 3-2 in the final. Also won Bronze in the Mens Class 10 Event.

 

Lawrence John (Class 10) won Gold in the Junior Event and Silver in the Mens Class 10 Event losing to Kim Daybell of England.

 

Paul Karabardak (Class 7) won Silver in the Mens Class 7 Event losing to Will Bayley of England. Also won Bronze medal in the A Open category.

 

Medal Total: 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 5 Bronze

 

Ashley Wray Class 11 also competed unfortunately the results are not yet available but I think he won a Bronze.

Welsh Championships 2014

Carmarthen

1&2 March

 

Day 1

Conor Edwards and Charlotte Carey were winners once again in the junior categories for a 4^th time respectively. Conor found himself at 2/2 with Jac Jenkins in the semi finals but squeezed the 5^th set to his advantage 11/4. In the final Conor beat number 1 seed Ryan Oyler 3/1 with a more powerful display. Oyler beat number 4 seed Callum Evans in the other half of the draw.

Charlotte, who retains her cup, had a tighter than expected final beating number 2 seed Beth Roberts 3/1 in the junior girls final. Beth beat Soffi Jenkins in their semi final encounter as Charlotte beat Kate Roberts in the other match.

Soffi and Charlotte teamed up to beat the ‘Roberts’ pairing in the junior girls final 3/1. Jac and Callum retained their title beating Lawrence John and Marc Castro in the boy’s equivalent. Later that day, it was the turn
of the U11 boy’s. The winner Joseph Roberts was in fine form beating Mithun
Padmanabhan in their final. In the female section 7 year old Anna Hursey won
the U11 girls Championships beating Cardiff’s Lauren Stacey in their final
match.

 

 

 

 

 

In the disability Championships (standing & wheelchair) – Ashley Davies beat all 4 opponents in the round robin on offer to win his gold medal with Nathan Thomas doing the same in their event. Nathan beat Swansea’s Paul Karabardak in the final encounter, whilst Ashley beat Rebekah Evans in their event. It’s the first time the Championships have been inclusive with disability events on offer for all entrants.

 

After his semi final loss in the junior singles, Jac Jenkins picked himself up to take the cadet singles with a final victory over Marc Castro (seeded 2) 3/0. It’s Jac’s first win in these Championships at this age level after losing to Callum Evans in last year’s final. Lydia John picked up the winner’s trophy in the cadet girls final (again for the first time) with a final win against Jamie-Lee Harley 3/1.

 

The last matches of the day saw the U13 boys and girls singles events finals take place. Cade Short faced off vs Joseph Roberts, whilst the U13 girls were a re-run of the cadet girls final with Jamie-Lee taking on Lydia John. Lydia lost the first end but rallied back to win once again 3/1 for the double. Cade avenged his earlier loss to Joseph to win the U13 singles and captures another Welsh title with a 3/0 win.

Once the U21 groups started there were a few games to note. Dan O’Connell took Jac Jenkins 3/1, Chloe Thomas beat Megan Phillips 3/1, Conor Edwards beat Ryan Oyler 3/1 and Callum Evans 3/2, whilst Nicole Hall took Angharad in a tight 5^th set match.

 

Back to the Men’s and women’s singles and Stephen Jenkins retained his title for a 2^nd time with a 3/2 win against Dan O’Connell in the final. Dan led 2/1 and had a small lead in the final 5^th set but Steve fought back like a champion and held his nerve well to seal it 11/8.

 

The women’s cup will have a new name on it come Monday as Charlotte Carey took 9 times champion Naomi Owen in another 5^th set battle. The hall stopped for both finals to commenceand the crowd were treating to 2 cracking games.

The Phillips twins teamed up to take the women’s doubles defeating Grech/Morgan in the semis and then Carey/Thomas in the final both 3/0. The men’s doubles winners were Dan O’Connell and Patrick Thomas as they beat Conor Edwards/Callum Evans in the final 3/0 and Ryan Oyler/Josh Stacey in the semis 3/1. Charlotte Carey completed the double with a final victory vs Chloe Thomas in the U21 women’s singles 11/4, 11/6 and 12/10. Daniel O’Connell avenged his loss in the men’s singles final with the U21 men’s title against Conor Edwards 3/0.

he Over 50’s singles was won by local boy David Lloyd, who beat Ray Goulding of Newport 3/2 in an epic challenge. Lee Thomas won the Vets singles with a tidy 3/0 win over Neil Wright in their encounter. Lee has been off the TT scene in recent years and it’s good to see him back in town. Doubles events went the way of Carey/O’Connell (mixed doubles) and Farrow/Thomas (Vets) as they took the trophies home. In the final match of the weekend (over 60 singles) it was Roger Grech who won the title with a magnificent match-up against Ray Goulding

Report on the Welsh Primary Schools Championships
23 February 2014

34 teams contested the Welsh Primary Schools Championships held in the Main Hall at the Sport Wales National Centre on Wednesday 19^th of February 2014 and for the second year in a row entries were turned away due to the event being oversubscribed.

Play got underway at around 9.30am as organisers split the entry into 6 groups, each group playing on 3 tables. Organisers were fortunate to have the assistance of TTW Volunteers who oversaw the groups. The volunteers did a fantastic job throughout the day and kept the groups on schedule. By midday the following teams had won their groups – Llangan B, Trowbridge A, Brynawel, Llangan A, St Marys A, and St Marys B.

At 1pm the final round of matches started, again under the watchful eye of the volunteers. The top 3 finishing teams were 3^rd – Anthony Fazio and David Gawronski (St Marys B), 2^nd – Elis Burgess and Billy Davies (Brynawel) and 1^st – Joseph Roberts and Jack ODuffy (St Marys A).

Ysgol y Wern took away the trophy for best sporting behaviour of its players, however organisers paised all players involved for the standard of play and sporting behaviour during the competition.

Youth Olympic Qualification

Seeded 4th on arrival, Charlotte Carey was in position to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games which will be held in Nanjing in August.

With a round 1 win versus Veronik (Slovenia) 3/2 and another against Italian Piccolin 3/1 it looked promising. A Quarter Final encounter against Nicole Trosman (who Charlotte lost to in the 2013 Italian Open) looked a good draw, especially at 2/0 up, but the Israel number 1 had a good game plan and came away with a 4/2 win

This put Charlotte into another draw the following day for 2 more qualification spaces. Here she drew Rita Fins of Portugal. Fins, World Ranked 107, could have been 3/0 up but Carey held her nerve and steered to a 4/1 win eventually

This meant a SF place against the slightly lower ranked Stefcova of home nation Czech (WR 52). The Czech tool the 1st and 4th both deuce to level at 2/2 as charlotte won sets 2 and 3. With both players sharing the next 2 sets 11/9 a 7th end was needed. The Czech number 1 came out of the blocks faster and won it 11/7.

With Charlotte out of the qualification series there was still the case of reserve spots should any of the qualified players become unable/ineligible to compete. This put Charlotte up against Piccolin once more but the Italian played the better quality to win 4/1 and secure a reserve spot

We are looking for individuals who may be prepared to set up doorstep community leagues.

 

These will be aimed at players of all ages for whom existing local leagues are not an option – perhaps because the standard is too high, perhaps in the case of younger players, the lateness of match finishing times is unsuitable, or perhaps just because there is no such local league currently available

 

We are keen to establish these in various appropriate localities across Wales.

 

As well as contributing an honorarium TTW will provide other support including full training and the necessary documentation

Coach sought to manage project- project fee of £5250 available

TTW seeks a UKCC Level 1 (or above) coach to deliver a project to increase participation amongst minority ethnic communities – predominantly in the Cardiff/Newport areas. Coaches who are currently in course of acquiring UKCC Level 1 but have not yet completed may be considered provided they complete the qualification before commencement

 

The person appointed will choose his/her own hours/times of working

 

A project fee of £5250 will be payable – based on results achieved. Application by submission of CV

New club opens in Aberdare

Aberdare Table Tennis club, organised by Stephen Jenkins and the RCT Sports Development team,  opens on 4th February at the Michael Sobell Sports Centre, The Ynys, Aberdare. It will run on Tuesdays between 5-7pm.

 

Formed with the benefit of a community chest grant award – and with 6 brand new tables – it will provide a great opportunity for the area

 

It will be run by Alex Prosser (ex Welsh international and former Welsh doubles champion)

 

The cost for the first two weeks is free then £2 thereafter. Come long and try it!

 

 

 

West of Scotland Open

28 January 2014

Nicole Hall, Chloe Thomas, Conor Edwards, Dean Cundy, Jac Jenkins and Soffi Jenkins made the trip North to Glasgow for the WOS Open 2014.

Chloe Thomas won the women’s band 1 event beating Scotland’s Gillian Edwards 3/0. Chloe beat Nicole in the semi finals. Nicole lost out on her own glory in the band 2, losing to Corrina Whitaker in the final 0/3.

The band 1 event saw both Dean and Conor lose to Kim Daybell (Eng), who eventually won the event.

Jac Jenkins lost in the SF of the band 3 to Andy Dunlop, the Scottish veteran.

World Junior Circuit & Youth Olympics

28 January 2014

Charlotte Carey was one win away from qualifying at the Youth Olympic world qualification event in Portugal this week. She lost out 0/4 to Chiu of Chinese Taipei, who eventually qualified in one of the 4 spaces available. Charlotte finished 8^th overall in the event and will now focus on the European qualification event in Hadonin, Czech in a few weeks.

The second event to take place in Portugal was the World Junior circuit finals which Charlotte qualified for through her good results in last year’s series (2013). Yet again the same player, Chiu ended chances to qualify through to the QF’s as Charlotte had lost to number 1 seed Doo of Hong Kong 4/1 and needed to finished second to qualify through. Chiu again won 4/0 and Charlotte’s only group victory was against Egyptian Helmy 4/0.

This meant she faced Uruguay’s Lorenzotti in the 9-16 match but didn’t reach her usual standards and lost to the lower ranked player 4/1 to end the event for this year

Focus now lies in Hadonin where no Asian player will be present so Charlotte has a better chance to qualify for the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China in August 2014

New Club Opening Up in Aberdare

Michael Sobell Sports Centre opens up a new table tennis club on 28^thJanuary (which is free for the first 2 weeks) in partnership with Sport RCT. The club, which has been organised by regional coach Stephen Jenkins, will help serve the area with a coaching platform for bigger and better things moving forward. Table Tennis in RCT is at an all time high and this exciting project just adds to the picture

The 2014 Second Youth Olympic Games will take place from the 17-28 August in Nanjing China.

 

Within the Qualification process the ITTF YOG Continental Qualification for Europe is in Hodinin, Czech Republic 9-11 February 2014.

 

The British Table Tennis Federation (BTTF) are allowed to enter one boy and one girl to represent Great Britain & NI.

 

Nominations were received from the Home Countries and a Selection process took place which resulted in the following being selected and funded by the BTTF
