Cardiff Grand Prix Report
23 December 2013
Ryan Jenkins claimed his 48th Grand Prix win on Sunday 22nd December with a revenge win against David McBeath of England 3/0 in the final. McBeath, who is based in Germany fulltime at present, beat the Welsh number 1 at the recent Six Nations a month ago. Jenkins beat English talent Sam Walker 3/1 in the semi finals with McBeath beating Lewis Gray.
Hannah Hicks stopped both titles staying in Wales with a 5th set win against Charlotte Carey in the women’s final. Carey, who has moved into the number 1 spot on the Welsh rankings recently, fought hard during the match but couldn’t get the lead she needed in the 5th to take the championship.
The previous day saw almost every band go the way of a red Welsh shirt with Ryan Oyler, Callum Evans, Jac Jenkins, Chris Griffiths, Angharad Phillips and Beth Roberts all winners in what was a dominant days play.

ETTU Coaching Conference
13-15th December 2013
Situated on the banks of the River Taff in the splendid settings of Sophia Gardens, the Wales National Sports Centre in the Principality’s capital city of Cardiff is the home for a current Coaches Conference organised by the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU).
Proceedings started on Friday 13th December and will conclude on Sunday 15th December 2013.
The theme for the conference is “What coaching style are you?” The conference focuses on how a coach should react to gain the best from the athlete under their care.
Addressed Conference
Proceedings commenced with a three hour talk by Andy McCann, an award winning physical education teacher and advisor who is a coach to high performance athletes in the United Kingdom.
Also addressing those present is Neil Robinson, coach to the Great Britain Paralympic Team; he spoke on the subject coaching disabled athletes and as to why in modern day society it is important to be competent at instructing in this field.
Also present is Paul Hughes, the Table Tennis Wales psychologist; on the first day of the conference he addressed the meeting on the topic is what is required from a coach to gain the best from the athletes and teams in their charge.
Theory to Practice
Meanwhile, concluding the opening day, which was focused on both theory and practice; Liu Yanjun, coach to the Austrian Women’s Team, explained the recent technical and tactical advances in the sport of table tennis and as to how coaches from Europe are implementing such changes.
Later in the programme; supporting the address presented by Liu Yanjun, Michail Katsikadelis of Greece will speak on the subject of multi-ball training following extensive research he has undertaken at the University of Thrace.
Important Meeting
“It was important to show that a small association like Wales, can organise and invite Europe to our capital Cardiff”, said Ryan Jenkins who is now very much at the helm of matters in Wales. “This kind of meeting with coaches is very important for us and the ETTU should think of hosting more regional conferences.”
A successful start to the conference and most certainly Ryan Jenkins can take a bow; still a player and the leading player in Wales but increasingly proving a most effective coach and more than competent administrator

Ryan Jenkins dropped out early with a QF loss to England junior Helshan Weerasinghe. Ryan still tops the overall pints list with Cardiff, Sussex and the West of Scotland GP’s all coming in the next few weeks.
Ryan Owen was back on show in Nottingham after a break from the game and, as always, battled hard throughout both days.

Blaenau Gwent Cadet/Junior Open
23 November 2013
Conor Edwards showed he is still top dog on the Welsh junior circuit with a 3-1 final win against Welsh number 1 Ryan Oyler yesterday at the Blaenau Gwent Junior boys singles category which was played in Abertillery Leisure Centre.
The Penygraig based Commonwealth Games squad member, has dropped to number 2 in recent times but showed he is back and wants his number 1 ranking back with a 11-8, 11-3, 8-11, 11-6 win. Oyler (number 1 seed)
beat Callum Evans in his semi final whilst Edwards beat Chris Griffiths in

Castro had to settle for Q-final exits.

The Ynysybwl player didn’t drop a set on the way to the title with 3-0 wins against Benedict Watson (QF), Josh Stacey (SF) and then Castro in the final. Marc beat Cade Short in the other semi final 3-1.
The cadet girls saw 7 year old Anna Hursey upset the draw with wins against Jamie-Lee Harley, Bethany Brewer and Charlotte Slye to reach the final against Lydia John (Swansea). Lydia showed why she deserved the title with a great display of controlled table tennis to eventually win 3-1.

Congratulations to Cade Short (winner) and Macauley Morgan (2nd) at the recent Cirencester Event on the weekend
ETTA
Stockton 4* Open
Great results this weekend at the Stockton 4* Junior and
Cadet open with several players making it to the money rounds
On the Saturday team events it was the cadet and junior girls teams who both made it to the final where they lost to Ireland and Preston respectively. The cadet boys lost to Scotland in the last 16 after they beat St Mary’s in round 1. The junior boys lost out in the QF round to Swerve TTC 3/0.
So, 2 silvers in the bag and then it turned to the singles events, with Lydia John in the U13’s. After getting through qualification and her QF match it was a tough semi against M Bhavika. It was a tough encounter but 1/3 loss from the Swansea player. So a good bronze never less.
After beating qualification themselves, Marc Castro and Josh Stacey made it to the last 32 of the cadet boy’s singles but couldn’t progress further against better opponents. Lydia lost once more to Bhavika (2/3) in the last 16 of
the cadet girls singles with Charlotte Slye losing the same round to Kate Whelan of Ireland
On Sunday, the junior boy’s event was too tough for Josh and Marc to make it through to the knockout rounds but Callum Evans (as R/up) and Chris Griffiths (as group winner) did. Callum lost out to Adam Harrison in the last 16 as Harrison was a surprise group runner up himself. Chris however almost went the whole way. Wins in the last 32 and last 16 meant a QF with Sam Maybe (seeded 3). Chris played well in this match up and advanced to the semi finals where he played number 2 seed Helshan Weerasinghe. This was a step too far however and that’s was the end of the road for Chris. Another bronze medal to bring back
The junior girl’s singles had 3 advance in Kate Roberts, Laura Edwards and Soffi Jenkins. Kate lost (0/3) in the last 16 to Emily Bolton whilst Laura beat Soffi 3/2 in the QF match. Laura then lost out to Bolton in
the semi final, and another bronze to the collection The final category of the day was the Band 1 girls singles and there were more medals to grab for Laura (Gold) and Soffi (Bronze).
Laura took a close final as Soffi settled for the semis round. Lydia beat team
mate Kate in the last 16 but lost out to Beth Farmworth in the QF stage. Laura
beat Farmworth in the SF to set up the final match vs Kerry O’Mahoney of
Ireland
1 gold, 2 silver & 4 bronze
Cardiff Junior and Cadet Open
In the second year in a row St Mellons Table Tennis Club hosted the Cardiff Junior & Cadet Open. This proved to be yet another successful Welsh ranking tournament with over 40 participants competing across three different categories for boy and girls.
Up first was the Cadet boys and girls. In the boys event 16 players participated and it came down to a final between the number 1 seed Jac Jenkins who beat Joshua Stacey in the semi final, against Marc Castro who got past the young Joseph Roberts in the second semi final. It was last years winner Jac Jenkins, who defended his title and took the glory by beating Marc 3-1 in a close and well fought final. In the Cadet girls it was Victoria Brookes who managed to take the title by beating Bethany Brewer in a close fought match.
The Under 13s event came next. In the boys category it was a repeat of the Glamorgan Closed final, with Cade Short getting the better of Joseph Roberts for the second time in as many weeks. In the girls event there were some very close matches. Lauren Stacey overcame a tough semi final match against Bethany Brewer winning 3-2 whilst Jamie Lee Harley won her semi final against Lara Whitton. Lara Whitton managed to overcome Anna Hursey in her group to advance to the Semi Finals. This set up a final match between the local talent Lauren Stacey going up against Jamie Lee Harley. In a match that had a lot of twists and turns. It was Jamie Lee Harley who came out on top 3-2 to claim top prize.
The Junior event was up next, with all the best Welsh players on show it was time for the older guys to battle it out. In the boys event it was the local boy Ryan Oyler who took the glory and the prize money after beating Chris Griffiths in a high standard final match 3-1. Chris Griffiths caused a small upset in the semi finals beating Welsh Junior number 1 Conor Edwards 3-1, whilst Ryan overcame a good effort from Jac Jenkins.
In the Junior Girls event Charlotte Carey won her group with Kate Roberts going through as runner up, whilst in the second group it was Beth Roberts who overcame Laura Edwards to qualify top of the group on count- back followed by Soffi Jenkins as runner up. This set up the semi final matches where Charlotte overcame Soffi 3-0 and Beth took the same score line against Kate Roberts. The final saw Charlottes experience and high level of table tennis come through again Beth Roberts and ran out to win 3-0 and claim the top prize.
Well done to all the winners and also to all the players who took part in the Cardiff Junior & Cadet Open.
We now turn our efforts to the North Gwent Junior and Cadet Open. Get your entry forms in!

European Championships – Singles Report
11th October, 2013
European Championships – Schwechat 2013
Singles Report
Charlotte Carey finished 2nd in her qualification group (losing to Erdelji of Serbia) but was picked out of the hat as one of the 7 ‘lucky losers’ to receive an invitation into the last 64. There she faced the Gold winning team event winner Ying Han of Germany. Charlotte played good at times throughout the encounter but a 0-4 result shows there were difficulties in putting enough pressure on her opponent in the match
Naomi Owen also finished 2nd spot but was not fortunate enough to be a ‘luck loser’ (to qualify that route). It was almost 1st spot though for Naomi losing in a tight 5 set battle to the higher ranked Privalova of Belarus 3-2. At 4-4 in the 5th things looked promising, but the Belarus star changed gear to pull away far enough to take it 11-4 (result: 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 8-11, 11-4)
Angharad and Megan fought as hard as possible but being 4th seeds it was always a case of 3 tougher tests in front of them. Megan had a 2-0 lead vs Agerholm (Denamrk) but the Dane battled back to win it 3-2. Angharad had a close affair with Truksova of Slovakia but the close 3-1 game just got away
Dan had to contend with Bobocica (Italy), Lakatos (Hungary) and Jean (Belgium) which was a tough ask and it was a tough task as he was unable to get the sets required to put any pressure on these top players
Doubles was another good chance to advance into the main rounds but Naomi & Charlotte lost to Gonderinger/Nagivardi in a close 3-1 but then beat the top seeded pair of Privalova/Creemers. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to progress
Please see below a link to their respective groups:

Para European Championships
10th October, 2013
Great success for Welsh players at the European Championships
GB finished 6th in the medal table at the recent Para European championships held in Lignano Sabbiadoro Italy, winning 2 gold 2 silver and 4 bronze medals.
Rob Davies (Brecon) became a double European champion winning the Class 1 singles title defeating team mate Paul Davies (Bridgend) in the final. Rob and Paul teamed up to take gold in the class 1 team event. Rob also won the award for best male wheelchair player at the championships.
Rob remained undefeated at the event and Paul lost only one match and that was against Rob! Both defeated the current world number 1 and Paralympic gold medalist German Holger Nikelis along with Paralympic silver medalist Jean Francois Ducay of France.
Sara Head (Beddau) took the bronze medal in the class 3 singles event losing a very close semi final encounter with France’s Fanny Bertrand 13-11 in the 5th set. Sara had another 5th set battle in the quarter final winning 14-12 in the 5th set. Sara, along with team partner Jane Campbell (London) won the bronze medal in the class 1-3 team event. Sara avenged her singles defeat against Bertrand winning 16-14 in the 5th set!
Paul Karabardak bounced back after a disappointing singles event to take the class 7 team bronze with partner Will Bayley. The pair narrowly missed out on final place and with the semi final match tied at 2-2, Paul lost 11-8 in the 5th set to Morales of Spain in the final rubber of a pulsating match.
Wales and indeed GB can be very proud of the performances of the Welsh contingent. The next major event will be the World championships which will be held in Beijing China September 6 – 15, 2014
In Summary
Rob Davies (Brecon) class 1 singles gold – team gold
Paul Davies (Bridgend) class 1 singles silver – team gold
Sara Head (Beddau) class 3 singles bronze – team bronze (with Jane Campbell – London)
Paul Karabardak (Swansea) team bronze (with Will Bayley – Kent)

European Championships – Vienna
9th October, 2013
Wales, represented by Naomi Owen, Charlotte Carey and Angharad Phillips, won the Standard division at the European Championships in Schwechat, Vienna.
After beating Denmark (3-2), Finland (3-0) and Norway in (3-0) the initial group, it was a semi final showdown with Switzerland. This went to the wire with Charlotte eventually winning 11-9 in the 5th set of the last match to earn the victory 3-2.
Another battle with Denmark was the prize for the division title with them beating Estonia in the other semi final. This was another titanic battle with Naomi winning 2 and Charlotte again pulling out the last match win to allow us to gain the trophy and get promotion to the higher division next October in Portugal.
There we will play the likes of Croatia, Italy and Slovakia which will be much tougher tests but very exciting.

SEPTEMBER 2013
6 Nations Veterans
Once again the Welsh Veterans have been in competition in September against England, Ireland, Scotland, Isle of Man and Guernsey this year in Dublin Ireland. This year’s elite of Welsh Veterans were represented by Steve Buck, Mark Farrow, Tomasz Rzeszotko, Regina Grech, Marilyn Morgan, Christine Watkins, Tony Collins, Steve Eades, Ray Goulding, Kath Mitchell Dawson, Paul Collins, Tony Needham, Roger Grech, Roger Thomas and Dennis Bromage.
The team did not disappoint – bringing home a hatful of medals once again.
Tomasz Rzeszotko retained his 40s men title with an outstanding result against Irelands Kevin Mackay winning 3-2 in sets. Mark Farrow made a successful weekend by earning gold in the 40s consolation.
Steve Eades won the consolation 50s Men Gold. Regina Grech pulled off a fantastic win beating Elaine Sayer of England 3-1 and continues to fly the flag of Welsh table tennis ladies around the world and retained her 50s ladies singles title.
Paul Collins pulled off a tremendous win in the quarter finals over John Magnal and just lost out in the men’s 60s semi finals.
Christine Watkins won the over 50s ladies consolation gold. The effort of the week must go down to Roger Thomas who continued to play in this event with severe bruising and muscular problems to win gold in the over 70s men singles beating the England no: 1 Keith Powell an absolute fantastic effort which cements Roger’s position at the top in his age group throughout the UK.
In the doubles event Regina Grech and Marilyn Morgan just lost out in the 40s ladies semi finals. Steve Eades and Tomasz Rzeszotko lost in the 40s semi finals. Roger Grech and Tony Needham just lost out in the Semi finals in the 60s doubles with Paul Collins and his partner from England Phil Biggs obtaining silver. Both Dennis Bromage and Roger Thomas obtained silver in the over 70s men doubles.
In the team’s event it was the ladies over 40s team that really pulled out all the stops with Marilyn Morgan having a fantastic result against England’s Rosemary Reignton and winning silver in the team events. A special mention for Tony Collins who had some tremendous battles with both the English no1 and 2 losing out in the fifth set in the singles and team events.
The event which was run by the Irish Veterans Table Tennis Association was a tremendous success the food and entertainment was fantastic. The company and stories shared with fellow competitors went on till the early hours of the morning.
I would like to thank Dennis Bromage who co-ordinated the finances and assisted myself once again in co-ordinating kit and answering players questions – what a fantastic supporter of Welsh Table Tennis Dennis has become.

GIRLS TEAM REPORT
The girls started in their first match against England north east. Beth Roberts kicked the match off with a convincing 3-0 win over top England under 13 Kate Nixon. Laura Edwards was up next but never really got to grips with the close to the table topspin style of Kayleigh Forster going down 3-1. Soffi Jenkins put the Welsh girls 2-1 ahead after the third match with a close 4 set win over Elinor Davidson. Beth and Soffi won their doubles match 3-1. Beth’s next singles was a tough one going all the way to 5 sets. Beth eventually came out on top winning 14-12 in a tense 5th set. Soffi then made short work of Kate Nixon in 3 quick sets. Great win for Soffi.
Laura Edwards was up last and again didn’t really get into her stride going down 3-1 to Eleanor Davidson. Overall a great start to the event with a notable performance from Soffi Jenkins.
Wales 5 England North East 2.
WALES V ENGLAND SOUTH EAST
The second game of the day was always going to be a tough one as the girls faced the team of Tin Tin Ho, Louis Peake and Emma Torkington. Kate Roberts replaced Laura for this game hoping to make her mark but had tough competition.
Each game was pretty one sided as the girls went down 3-0 every game. Beth Roberts was the stand out player making sure that Tin Tin Ho didn’t have it all her own way pushing her close in each set. Wales 0 England South East 7.
WALES V NORTHERN IRELAND
The last match on Friday was a crucial game against Northern Ireland where the winners would secure a second place in the group and give the girls a chance at playing for positions 1-4. First up was Beth and despite having a 9-6 in the 5th set, couldn’t hold out and went down 11-9 in the decider against Hannah Lynch-Dawson. Soffi couldn’t maintain the form she showed in the first match of the day losing 3-0 to Emma Ludlow.
With the match standing at 0-2 Laura clawed a game back with a 5 set win over Rebecca Finn. The double was always going to be an important game but unfortunately to wasn’t going to be as Beth and Laura lost 3-1. Beth then made the the overall match score 3-2 with a good performance against Emma Ludlow. Wales had to win the next 2 matches. Laura couldn’t get to grips with Hannah and went down 3-0. With the match at 4-2 and out of reach Soffi showed great team spirit and never let the match result effect her performance in the final game making short work of Rebecca Finn 11-4 11-5 11-7. The girls would now play off for positions 5-8 in the morning.
WALES V SCOTLAND
First thing Saturday the team made short work of Scotland as they play-off matches are played to a result. The girls wind the match 4-0 with everyone winning their singles 3-0 and a solid doubles win. The team now face England North West to Decide 5th & 6th Position.
WALES V NORTH WEST
With Beth and Laura losing the opening 2 singles, Laura stepped up and game a great performance against Amy Hutchings in a match that went down the the wire. Laura pulled it out of the bag in the decider with a succession of counter loops that eventually wind the match. With Laura still fired up from her win she teamed up with Beth in the doubles and got the result with a 3-0 win. Overall match standing at 2-2.
Beth the struggled with the consistency of Emily Bolton and went down 3-0, Laura was then involved in another 5 set win over Beth Farnworth. With the match tied at 3-3 Soffi stepped up to the plate and managed to secure a 4 set win over Amy Hutchings. A good team effort to win the match 4-3 after being 3-2 down.
5th place for the girls with some good performances. A respectable finish as the girls team are younger than most of the other teams.

DISABILITY TEAM REPORT
There were 3 categories Standing Learning and Wheelchair, Lawrence John Standing, Ashley Wray Learning and Cellan Hall Wheelchair. Each Team Match consisted of 3 individual matches best of 5 games. Order of play Standing Learning and then Wheelchair Disability.
Lawrence John was the star of the show not losing a game throughout the event which showed great determination for his first School Games. He certainly made his mark amongst his opposition. His only 1 set dropped was against England South West’s Billy Shilton who was fired up for the game but Lawrence secured defeat 11-7 11-7 8-11 11-9. Lawrence was to meet Billy in the final of the individual event which he secured his 2nd medal of the competition.
The decider for Gold or Silver was a match against England Midland. Lawrence opened the book with a convincing win 11-6 11-6 11-2 over Craig Allen. Ashley feeling the pressure of the crowd unfortunately went down 11-7 11-4 11-8. It was then down to Cellan Hall to win the Gold for Wales against a tough competitor and fellow friend Daniel Bullen, The first game went to Daniel 11-8, Cellan pulled back with a 15-13 win in the second. Daniel then won a close third game battle 13-11. The crowd were behind both teams and it was a great atmosphere but unfortunately for Wales Cellan lost the fourth 11-5. A great team performance throughout but we couldn’t quite step up to the occasion. It was a great game to watch but Wales had to settle for Silver.
Nicole Hall – Team coach commented “Over the Weekend I thought the team played very well with them only losing 1 match. The team support was good throughout the tournament especially in the last match for 1st and 2nd place. Very few sets were dropped as the boys were very focused and up for every point”
INDIVIDUAL RESULTS
GIRLS
Beth Roberts finished 1st in her group matches with fantastic wins over Emily Bolton Bethany Wilson and Rebecca Finn. A great 5 set counter agains Emily Bolton with Beth coming out on top.
Laura Edwards finished 2nd in her group with wins over Kayleigh Forster and Erin Thompson. Lois Peake proving to strong with a 0-3 result secured Laura’s 2nd place.
Soffi Jenkins also finished 2nd in her group with wins over Olivia Churchill and Eleanor Davidson. Emma Torkington took the first spot with a close first 12-10 win, but proved too strong for Soffi taking the next 2 sets 11-4 11-8.
Kate Roberts didn’t make it through her tough group draw with defeats against Jasmin Johns Isobel Ashley and Kirsten Atkinson, Kate took a promising first set agains Kirsten 11-6 but couldn’t keep the momentum with a 9-11 6-11 7-11 next 3 games, Kate remained positive throughout her first School Games experience. Her attitude and team spirit remained excellent throughout the competition.
With a positive feeling about the next round we were up for the next knock out round but our fellow competitors were also on top and none of our girls made it through to the quarter final stages. These were tougher games and even though the girls fought hard they couldn’t pull it out of the bag.

Boys Team Event
Wales Vs England South East
In the boys team event it was Conor Edwards who took to the court first, Conor played some fantastic tables tennis and managed to dispatch Marcus Giles 3-0. Ryan Oyler went up next against top English Junior Danny Lawrence. This match was a thriller and caught the eye of most supporters in the arena. Ryan took a 2-1 lead before Danny Lawrence levelled the match at 2-2, from there on in Ryan lifted his level and took the 5th set 11-7 to give Wales a 2-0 lead. The third game saw Chris Griffiths take on English Number 2 Junior Helshan Weerasinghe. After losing the first two games 11-6 Chris quickly found his range and picked up his performance to level the game at 2-2, in the deciding 5th set it was Helshan who came out on top 11-6. This meant the doubles was next. Conor Edwards teamed up with Chris Griffiths but they couldn’t seem to find their range and lost 3-1. With the match level at 2-2 Conor stepped up next, he took on Danny Lawrence. Conor seemed to flow through the gears and breezed past Danny 3-0. Wales lead 3-2 with Chris going up against Marcus Giles next. Chris seemed to dominate the match from the start and ran out to a 2-0 lead before Marcus pulled a set back. Chris found himself again and had a 10-8 lead in the 4th set with two game points. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and Chris struggled to close the match out, Marcus took the upper hand and eventually won the 5th set 11-4. The game was tied at 3-3 with Ryan Oyler taking on Helshan Weerasinghe for the match. Helshan had the upper hand throughout the match and took the win for his team. Wales losing out on this occasion 4-3 but so close to a big win.
Wales Vs South West
After brushing of the disappointment of losing the first match. The Welsh boys fought back to beat England South Wales 4-3. Connor winning his two matches against Hugo Pang and Jamie Travillion, Ryan Oyler beat Finn Morgan Bayliss after losing his first match to Hugo Pang in 5 sets. Chris Griffiths won his first game against Morgan Bayliss but lost out to Chopper Jamie Travillion. Jac Jenkins teamed up with Conor Edwards in the doubles but lost out 3-0 to Hugo Pang and Daniel Mc Tiernan.
Wales Vs Scotland
Wales seemed to keep sailing after the win against England South West and brushed Scotland aside to qualify for the semi finals. After the first match where Ryan Oyler lost 3-2 to the young talent of Chris Wheeler. It was always in the hands of the welsh. Conor Edwards beat Yasor Razouk 3-1, Chris Griffiths beat Yang Jin 3-1 followed by a 3-2 doubles win for Oyler and Edwards against Wheeler and Razouk. Wales lead 3-1 with Conor up next against Chris Wheeler. Conor took revenge on Chris after losing out the weekend before. Conor took a 3-1 win over the Scot. Ryan Oyler and Chris Griffiths closed out a 6-1 Victory and then looked to the Semi Finals.
Semi Finals
Wales Vs England Midlands
A tricky semi final match against England Midlands was up next for the Welsh and when Conor Edwards took the first match beating Tom Jarvis 3-1 it looked like the spoil was on the cards. Ryan Oyler found the going tough against Adam Harrison and lost 3-0. Chris Griffiths stepped up next against another strong England International in the form of Sam Maybe. Chris lost the first 2 sets but managed to pull a set back, however Sam found another gear to close the game out 3-1. In the doubles Oyler and Edwards found the pace of the game a bit to much and lost out 3-0. Wales found themselves 3-1 down with Conor Edwards up next against the in form Adam Harrison. This match seemed to have so many momentum swings. Adam lead 1-0 before Conor took a 2-1 lead. Harrison pulled a set back to take the game into a decider. At 6-6 in the 5th set it was the English who took control and ran away 11-6 giving the match to England Midlands. This meant Wales had to play for a bronze medal.
Bronze Medal Match
Wales took on the Mighty North East in the Bronze Medal match. Wales never looked in doubt of winning this match and seemed to sweep aside England North East. Conor Edwards beat Aj Hisura 3-1, Ryan dispatched David Thompson 3-0 and Chris proved to strong for James Hobson after winning in the 4th set. Jac Jenkins teamed up with Ryan Oyler to see out the doubles and played some fantastic table tennis. Winning the game 3-0 and giving the bronze medal to Wales.
The team gave a fantastic account of themselves, they showed great team spirit, support and courage. Winning a bronze medal at the School Games is a great achievement for the boys as in previous years they have finished in 6th and 7th position. The team felt they could have got at least a Silver medal if we could have closed out the math against South East, but nether the less it was a good learning experience for the players and im sure they will be back next year to better themselves.
Singles
In the Singles all the Welsh players manages to qualify through their groups in second place.
Ryan Oyler finished second to number 1 seed Helshan Weerasinghe. Conor Edwards lost out to Chris Wheeler in a epic 5 set match to finish runner up in his group, whilst Chris Griffiths finished second to Jared Patel. Jac Jenkins prove why he is one to watch in the future and qualified through his group on count back after Sam Maybe took top stop with 100% record. Jac finished second knocking out Alex Shorey and Alisdair Rennet.
In the last 16 Wales had three casualties, first Jac Jenkins lost to Jared Patel 3-1. Ryan Oyler seemed to struggle after sustaining a knee injury in the team event and lost out 3-0 to Marcus Giles. Chris Griffiths gave a fantastic account of himself and found himself 2-1 and 10-8 up on Sam Maybe only for him to play a few unsure shots and give Sam Maybe the 4th set. In the 5th set it was Sam Maybe who took control of the match and run away with a 3-2 score. Conor Edwards managed to keep his nerve and win in 5 sets against the young Tom Jarvis of England.
In the Quarter Finals Conor went up against Danny Lawrence. It was the same scoreline as the team event with Conor Edwards proving to strong for Danny and took the match 3-0 to set up a semi final showdown with Sam Maybe.
In the Semi Final Edwards quickly found himself leading 2-0. Sam pulled back the third set, from there on in it was all Conor. Playing some fantastic shots past Sam he closed out the game 3-1.
This set up a Final match against number 1 Seed Helshan Weerasinghe. Conor came blasting out of the blocks and found himself 10-5 up in the first set. Conor then seemed to relax a little bit to much and Helshan pulled it back to 10-10 only to close it out 12-10 to give the Englishman a 1-0 lead. The second set went the opposite way, Helshan raced to a 8-4 lead only for Conor to pull it back to 10-10. Once again it was Helshan who held his nerve to close it out 12-10. Conor looked slightly dejected but kept trying to pull himself back into the match. However Helshan had grown in confidence and seemed to control the 3rd set to eventually took a 11-7 victory. This gave Conor Edwards a Silver Medal which is a great achievement.
After winning 6 medal at this School Games in Sheffield, this shows that table tennis in Wales is improving massively and we are heading in the right direction. Well Done to all the Welsh Team over the weekend for their determination, team spirit and motivation to improve and succeed.

AndroKids Dusseldorf Open
2nd September, 2013
The Androkids Dusseldorf Open turned out very successful for Wales this weekend
With over 1400 athletes from a variety of countries turning out there was always going to be tough matches. Callum and Jac showed their partnership works with a bronze medal in the boys team event after beating some top opponents on the way to the semi finals
Due to their age differences Charlotte Slye and Laura Edwards had to play in different teams with German partners and both lost out in their team matches
The next day had the players qualify for their respective singles. All players got through with Charlotte coming runner up and Jac, Callum and Laura topping their groups with 3 wins each
On Sunday the knockout started but this was after the players were treated to a special Bundasliga match on Saturday night. They all got to see Timo Boll and other top players close up as Dusseldorf took on Grenzau in a Bundsliga match.
On Sunday Laura made a great start with a 3-0 win in the last 32 round as did Charlotte in her category. Jac and Callum made it through the last 64 and last 32 rounds comfortably enough but both were stopped in the last 16 with close 3/2 losses.
Laura made it to the QF where she lost to the number 1 seed 3/0. Charlotte couldn’t get past her number 1 seed also losing 3/0. All players departed the tournament in a matter of 50 minutes which took the wind out of our sails a little. Never less, a great event and great results once more on the continent
August 2013
European Minis Championships
26th August, 2013
European Mini Championships
This is the first time in a while Wales have entered teams into the Euro Mini Championships
The competition itself was very tough but hopefully very beneficial and those who went would learn a lot from the best players in Europe. The only two players that made it through their first group and into the main draw were Joseph Roberts and Bethany Brewer. Joseph won 1 match in the group and In Bethany’s group 3 players went through so although she didn’t win a game she still went through to the main draw. Matthew Francis was the only other person to win a match in the first group but didn’t make it through to the main draw.
Day 2 saw better results from some of the players. Lydia John won 2 out of 3 matches 3-1, and 3-0, in her consolation group before losing 3-0 to the English number 2. Lydia then lost in the last 16 of the consolation 3-0 to a good left handed player from Spain. Joseph Roberts lost in the main competition which meant he was then put into the consolation event. Joseph won 3 matches but lost in the last 32. Joseph has another year in the same competition so showed promising results. Bethany also lost her match in the main draw and then lost in the last 16 of the consolation. jamie Lee had a good chance of winning her first match of the competition against the English number 2 losing 14-12 in the 5th set but it wasn’t to be.
Cade, And Matthew tried hard in the consolation groups but lost all 4 matches in the group so got knocked out at the first stage. Both players came close in one match but got tense at the end of the 5th set.
Overall results:
Joseph won 4, lost 6
Lydia won 3 lost 6
Matthew won 1, lost 7
Cade lost 8
Bethany lost 5
Jamie Lee lost 9

Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014
22nd August, 2013
The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next July is the target for the top Welsh senior players as they set their sights on a spot in the team. Players will need to justify their standard with results and improvements over the next 11 months and see a rise in the ITTF world rankings to give themselves the best opportunity possible to be selected.
The Games, which began in 1974 in Canada, have only included table tennis 3 times (Manchester 2002, Melbourne 2006 and Delhi 2010), and Glasgow will be the 4th opportunity for Welsh players to win those sought after medals.
Wales won a table tennis silver back in 2002 when Ryan Jenkins and Adam Robertson fought through the rounds unseeded to reach the men’s doubles final where they were beaten by England’s Andrew Baggaley and Gareth Herbert with the tightest of margins. The men’s team of Ryan, Adam and Stephen Jenkins lost a bronze medal play-off to Nigeria in 2006 after beating England in a group match and later Singapore in the semi finals.
In the same Games, Adam lost his semi final singles match to Australia’s William Henzell and then later the bronze play-off to Nigeria’s Segun Toriola to add to the agony of Team Wales. In the 2010 Delhi Games Wales didn’t get the medal play-off matches they would have hoped for without Adam in the team but remained threats to all their opponents throughout.
The women’s teams and individuals of 2002, 2006 and 2010 have all fought bravely but not yet had the medal matches they so dearly want but there have been some fantastic efforts and tough battles throughout.
Charlotte Carey (Wales’ recent European junior bronze medallist) was the youngest athlete of all the sports for Team Wales in the 2010 Games. It must be said that the women have had to endure the mighty task of living with a Singapore team, over the last 11 years, who have been one of the best teams in the world. This has thwarted their medal chances somewhat. The men’s events have had the same challenges in recent times as the Singapore players have reached new levels and have stretched all the other countries in the process
So that is a brief look at Welsh table tennis history at the Commonwealth Games but what about the future? The men’s squad of Adam, Ryan, Stephen, Daniel O’Connell, Conor Edwards and Dean Cundy will hope to better their team placing of 6th they achieved at the Commonwealth Championships in Delhi back in May 2013.
The TTW won’t have the luxury of selecting the team from the squad above however; this is the task of the Welsh Commonwealth Games Federation, so players need to give themselves the best fighting chance possible. The women’s squad (who also finished 6th in Delhi last May) of Naomi Owen, Charlotte Carey, Megan Phillips, Angharad Phillips, Chloe Thomas and Nicole Hall is a close affair and again it will be their jobs over the next 11 months to impress and put themselves in the right place at the right time.
The players have been jostling in the pack to gain their positions and the bell for the final lap is about to sound. The home straight will be in sight soon enough and players will want to get on the bus up the M6 to Scotland for the most important multi-sport event Wales compete in.

Hamburg Report
We had teams from 5 countries: Wales, Guernsey, Romania, Latvia and Germany all in attendance. There were some great memories to be remembered. It lasted nearly 2 weeks but many participants would stay another week longer.
We had the chance to visit “Dialogue in the Dark” and experience how blind people cope with everyday life. We were guided and walked through the darkness for about an hour. We also watched a bit of table tennis history of Korea. Film presented North and South Korea, who united together just once to stand the chance against China. It was moving film which showed political differences between Korea. The interesting fact is that the Chinese team hegemony in Women table tennis was stopped in 1992 only once by the Korean team. Since then, they remain unbeaten.
The Table tennis training on the camp wasn’t as intense as some players would have expected it to be. It was run by two young German coaches/players: Hermann (2 Bundesliga) and Dennis (3 Bundesliga). The main aim of the Camp was to exchange cultural aspects and to meet new people. On the top of that there were useful technical and tactical trainings.
Personally, a lot of the TT aspects I found really interesting, useful and different from what we’re doing in Wales. Ranging from warm-ups, fitness to technical strokes. As much as all players were exhausted after Camp they admitted it was worth coming there.
Wales was represented by Macaulay Morgan, Liam Winder and Lawrence John. They represented Wales well and kept a professional attitude towards their TT training at all times

Day 10 (finals Day)
Just one match today and it was the most important for many years. Charlotte and doubles partner Kim Vermaas were in semi finals action against Balint/Trosman on table 1 (which was covered by Laola.tv on the ETTU website
Winning 1-0 and 6-3 we looked like on the golden road but they fought back to level and then to extend to 2-1 to them. Charlotte and Kim dug in deep to win set 4 13-11 but the 5th wasn’t to the same quality and our opponents took the positive stance to win 11-6.
Bronze, but a very good bronze at a high level.
Day 9
Conor started the day for us but Charlotte certainly finished it!

Medway GP report – Jenkins is back….
10th June, 2013
It has been a lean season of the GP front for Ryan Jenkins but he seems to enjoy the last event of the season winning it the past 3 times. Ryan beat Tobias Berman (Sweden), Matt Ware, Mike O’Driscoll, Tom Maynard and Gavin Rumgay (final) to secure the title. With injuries and International coaching duties, Ryan was unable to win the overall tally(which went to Chris Doran this season) but did manage a credible 4th.

Earlier in the day Naomi lost out to the talented HK player Doo 4/1 in the last 128. Charlotte, Dan, Megan and Conor are all fairly inexperienced but have pushed forward somewhat and played to a good level through these championships. Ryan, with his troubled back problems, made it as far as his ranking shows and lost to the higher ranked Slovenian, Lasan 0/4 after good wins in his previous 3 matches.

21st February, 2013
In the Veterans final weekend of the season at W.I.S. the outcomes of both divisions went down to the final round of matches in both divisions.
On the Saturday Cardiff gave themselves hope of snatching the Division 1 championship by recording a very good 7 – 0 win over the leaders Ynys Mon leaving them level on points with Ynys Mon, who stayed top by having a slender 2 game advantage going into the Sunday matches.
On the Sunday they both won their first match 7 – 0, so Cardiff needed to win 7 – 0 and hope that Ynys Mon would drop 2 games to Eastern Valley A. Cardiff went on to beat Carmarthen

17th February, 2013
Whilst travelling back from this weekend’s Welsh Euro Challenge I had the opportunity to reflect upon some of the performances I witnessed. Obviously my attention was focussed fully upon our up and coming Welsh players and there were a number of lessons to take from this event that will hopefully become a fixture in the annual events calendar.
For me, there were a number of stand out performances of which I would like to highlight two. Firstly, Nicole Hall gaining victory against her Welsh counterpart Beth Roberts. Matches against your native rivals always provide an added edge and Nicole showed a great deal of courage and fight to ensure that she gained the win. Very impressive.
17th February, 2013
Day 2 of the Welsh Euro Challenge saw the final matches in each age category played with some fantastic play on show.

Charlotte Carey, seeded 11th for the event, lived up to her ranking and finished at that number. The World Junior Championships, being played in Guatemala 25-27th January 2013, was attended by players all over the globe, from every continent. Charlotte, along with Laura Pfefer of France, were the 2 European participants on show. After losing 1-4 to the number 1 seed, then beating New Zealand’s top player 4-0, it was a crunch match early on Saturday morning to make it through to the quarter finals. This was a tough ask with Lam of Hong Kong being too consistent and strong to win it 4-0. Charlotte picked herself up to defeat Enriquez of the host nation 4-2 to play for 9-12th place. The last match proved the toughest with Charlotte losing 3-4 (9-11 in the last) to finish joint 11th spot and take a $650 prize
