Veteran Team Championships of Wales

Weekend 1 Report

 

The first round of matches in the Veteran Team Championships of Wales got underway over the weekend. An entry of 14 teams across two divisions competed at Cardiff City Community Table Tennis Club, who played host for the weekend of matches.

The event was organised and coordinated by Veteran Lead Officer, Paul Collins. The event was delivered by National Competitions Lead Officer, Ryan Trigg with support of Welsh Lead Umpire Peter Higgins over the weekend.

 

In the Premier Division, the first weekend of matches ended with the top four teams being separated by just two points, Gwent A ended the weekend with ten points winning five out of their six matches and sit at the top of the league table by games difference. Second position is occupied by Gwent C who also won five out of six games. Cardiff A are in third positions with eight points following four wins and two defeats. Swansea A also gained eight points but occupy fourth place on games difference. Amwlch A hold fifth spot after recording two wins. Gwent B occupy sixth spot after recording a close 4-3 victory over Swansea B, who sit at the base of the table.

In the individual averages, Lee Thomas ended the weekend at the top of the leader board with a 100% record, winning ten matches from ten. Owen Clutterbuck is also undefeated after the first weekend.

 

The top spot in Division One is occupied by Carmarthen A who recorded six wins from six matches and sit 4 points adrift of Gwent E who are in second place. After winning 3 matches from six, Gwent D sit in third place on games difference to Rhyl TTC who both hold six points. Fifth and six spot are occupied by Cardiff A and Amwlch B both with four points. Gwent F sit at the bottom of the division with two points following a win over Amwlch B.

In the individual averages Carmarthen’s Craig Henton leads the way with a 100% record after winning all 12 matches with teammate Lucy Page also finishing the first weekend with a 100% record after winning six from six.

 

The first weekend of matches proved to be extremely competitive in all divisions. This leads up to an exciting second weekend with everything to play for. He second weekend of matches will take place in Amwlch, North Wales over the weekend of Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd April 2023.
