Silver Success for Carey at Spanish Masters

Charlotte Carey was in sizzling form in return to action at the Spanish Masters earlier this month earning a fantastic silver medal against a very competitive field. Charlotte defeated 3 higher ranked opponents along the way. Only falling short to Bruna Takahashi, the world number 47 in the final.

Having been handed an extremely tough group finding herself seeded 3rd out of 4, this certainly did not phase the 24-year-old.

In the opening day of competition Charlotte started explosively cruising past 73 in the world Maria Xiao of Spain in straight sets for a comprehensive victory. Day 2 started in similar fashion as Carey from originally Ebbw Vale dealt with two more Spaniards Cristobal and Zhang (125) both 3-1. Ending the group stage and day 2 top of the group and progressing into the Semi Finals the next day.

Finals day saw a stunning hard-fought semi-final victory from a confident Carey as she defeated Dvorak (ESP) who is 78 in the world rankings. The Final was always going to be a huge test as the Brazilian opponent Bruna Takahashi is ranked 47 in the world and came into the final also in good form. The favourite took control in the opening games taking a 3-0 lead, but a spirited Carey came back on narrowly losing out 4-3.

Reflecting on her performance Charlotte commented “I’m really happy with my performance, going into the event I could see I had a difficult group being the third seed in it and having to play my teammate. However, I had beaten the number one seed in the group previously, so I was looking for another upset. To take out all the Spanish national team ranked higher than me on the way to the final felt amazing. I was obviously slightly disappointed to lose in the final but happy I managed to come back from 3-0 down and show a strong performance in one of my first events back against a much higher ranked player.”
