Senior Welsh Team Championships 2022/23 – Weekend 2 Report

The second weekend of matches in the Welsh Team Championships certainly did not disappoint. Plenty of intense matches to conclude a fantastic tournament.  

In the Premier Division, Swansea A and Rhondda A tied on 18 points at the top. Swansea A were pipped at the post by a strong Rhondda A team on games for and against. Louie Evans, Joe Ratajczac, Beth Richards and Harri Docherty put in great performances over the two weekends. Harri Docherty helping Rhondda to win the title by winning 10 from 10 this weekend. 

There was also a tie on points in the middle of the table, Swansea B and Gwent A both finished the season tied on 9 points, Swansea finishing third by 1 game.  

Unfortunately, at the other end of the table and relegated from the division were last year’s winners Cardiff City A, along with Cardiff League A. Both teams will be looking to bounce straight back up to the premier next season.  

In the individual standings, Joe Ratajczac of Rhondda A topped the averages winning 17 of 18, Nancy Yeh won 17 from 20 and Louie Evans coming away winning 15 out of 18 matches.

Swansea University A added to their strong performances of the first weekend to ensure they were crowned Champions of Division 1, going unbeaten all season. North Gwent A finished runners up after a strong weekend. In third place Bridgend B pipped Bridgend A to the bronze position. At the foot of the table Trinity and Gwent B found themselves relegated to division 2. 

The individual averages were led by Swansea University’s Jacob Evans who came away with a 100% record with 18 wins from 18.

Division 2 was an extremely close contest, which went down to the final game of the season. Just a single point separating the top three teams before the final game, it was all to play for between Swansea University B, North Gwent B and Swansea C.  

Swansea University B secured a 4-2 victory against North Gwent B whilst Swansea C come away with a 6-0 win over Bridgend. This meant that the Division 2 title went to Swansea University B. Second spot went to Swansea C, who saw of North Gwent B by two points. North Gwent B secured third spot and a place on the podium but were very unlucky to just miss out on promotion.  

At the other end of the table, the race for survival also went down to the final day. The youngsters of Cardiff City B retained their division status by pulling out two phenomenal results against Bridgend C and Cardiff League B who both suffered relegation from the division. 

In the individual averages, Reece Lo of North Gwent B won 19 matches from 20. Swansea University’s Ian Parkyn won 13 of 14 games. Only one competitor remained unbeaten in the division, fresh from competing in the World Veteran Championships in Oman, Swansea’s Dennis Bromage came away with a 100% record winning 6 from 6.

The third division was another division that saw the winners and runners up tied on points. Carmarthen managed to fend off Rhondda B to the title by just a single game, both teams will be promoted to the second division for next season. Third position went to Swansea D whilst Gwent C secured their division status by finishing in fourth position ahead of Bridgend D and North Gwent C who will be relegated to division four next season.  

Jayden Meadows put in some fantastic performances across the two weekends and went unbeaten winning all 20 matches.

Swansea University C secured the Division 4 title remaining unbeaten across the competition. Swansea E finished as the runners up of the division and will gain promotion to division three next season. A young Rhondda C team secured a podium finish ending the season in third. 

At the other end of the table, the fight for survival came down to the final day. Gwent D pulled off two great draws to ensure that they retained their status in division 4. Unfortunately, Bridgend E were relegated along with North Gwent D.  

The individual averages were led by Peter Daish who helped to steer Swansea University C to the title winning all his 12 matches, whilst Cerys Evans of Swansea E won 15 from 16 matches.

Division 5 contained a lot of young aspiring junior players, and it was great to see how well they all conducted themselves and played throughout the tournament. There are certainly players to watch out for in the future! 

 The youngsters of Cardiff City C led the way in the division winning all 10 matches to secure the Division title. Cardiff City D finished runners up only losing two matches to the division champions. A young Rhondda D made up the podium places. At the foot of the table were the young players of Rhondda E, Bridgend F and Penlan, who all gained valuable experiences and will be certainly looking to build of those experiences next season. 

 Cardiff City’s Jett Wong and Oliver Jordan finished at the top of the individual averages both coming away winning all 20 of their matches. All other young teams gave great performances and gained some valuable experiences of performing at competition level, some competing for the very first time.
