Merthyr Community Club Launch Night
Merthyr community club launch night happened to land on St David’s Day and what a night it was for Welsh table tennis. Led by Welsh Table Tennis’s number 1 senior male player Callum Evans, it was a rather successful night over at Merthyr College. The hall was filled with children from 6 different schools in the Merthyr area and ITV Wales were recording live. ITV Wales interviewed Callum Evans about the community club and how he will be supporting the club in the future. ITV Wales touched upon Merthyr being a deprived area and what this new club will bring to the area, giving children of all ages and backgrounds access to weekly training with Wales’s best senior player.
The club night was held at Merthyr College which is a new partnership that Table Tennis Wales has started, and with thanks to Simon Evans and everyone at the college the club night was a massive success. With the club running on a weekly basis on a Wednesday night Callum hopes to find the next new number 1 and with enough training and support there may have been one in the room last night.
Alongside Merthyr College we have been working with Table Tennis Wales’s key partners. They are the Boys and Girls Club, Disability Sports Wales, Street Games and Active Merthyr. They have all been a massive help in getting the community club running and it is partnerships that we look forward to working with now and in the future.
In the future we hope to get more players, more coaches and more expertise in the hall of Merthyr College. Looking at splitting the session into a junior session and an adults session, we want to make sure that everyone gets the right training and is on the path to improvement as soon as possible. It’s a very exciting future for all and one that head coach Callum Evans looks forward too.
A big thank you to everyone who turned up, to Simon Evans for supporting the programme and giving Table Tennis Wales the access to the hall, for providing refreshments for everyone to enjoy on the night and for advertising and promoting the launch night on social media. A big thank you also, to all of the supporters, the staff of Table Tennis Wales for turning up and giving their time to support the club and to practice with the children in Merthyr. It was a very successful night and we look forward to running them on a weekly basis at Merthyr College!
