Meet the TTW Players: Dylan Williams

Dylan Williams is just one of the many players inspired to get into table tennis thanks to the dedication of volunteers.

“Norman Jenkins inspired me to start playing table tennis,” Dylan told us. “Without Norman, I probably would not have been introduced to the sport, and I would not be where I am now.”

Dylan was introduced to the sport through a lunchtime club Norman was running in his primary school, and benefitted from the long-time volunteer’s special ability to develop new players.

“His enthusiasm and encouragement of all players he coaches are second to none,” Dylan continued, “I will always be grateful to Norman.”

A player who is progressing well through the Table Tennis Wales ranks, Dylan is a representative of his country at youth levels and boasts national titles to his name – a proud achievement as he aims to follow in the footsteps of his role model and Welsh star, Anna Hursey.

We recently spoke to Dylan about his fledgling career and ambitions.

What have been your most memorable achievements so far?

“I have had some fantastic achievements since being part of the National Squads. I have represented Wales in three British Primary Schools and two British Senior Schools, as well as trips to Sweden and most recently to France for the Eurominis.

“However, my most memorable moment was winning both the U11 and U13 Naional titles in 2024!”

How do you handle the pressure of competing for your country?

“I try to keep a calm mind, and I try not to overthink it, otherwise I end up feeling under more pressure. To stay focused on high-stake matches, I just try and focus on one point and one set at a time.”

What advice would you have for anyone aiming to get to where you are?

“You should have self-belief and determination, and don’t forget that it won’t all come at once; you need to keep on trying. You won’t always be the best at everything and losing only helps you as a player to learn.”

What challenges have you faced in your career so far?

“Back when I was in the Dragons squad, a number of players were selected to move up to the Transition squad but I wasn’t selected. It was very disappointing, and I questioned myself about being good enough.

“Rather than giving up, I continued to work hard in training sessions and tournaments to get me into the Transition squad and then onto the full Aspire squads.”

What’s next? What are your aims?

“My goal is to win the next National titles in both U13 and U15 categories.

“I would also like to improve my performance when entering European tournaments.”
