Girl Guides and Table Tennis Wales: Empowering Leaders Through Sport

The Table Tennis Wales Activators course was recently delivered to 20 Girl Guide leaders across North Wales, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to introduce table tennis into their local groups. To support their efforts, kit bags have been purchased for each leader, ensuring they have the necessary resources to implement engaging and structured sessions for young participants.

Providing structured training and equipment has been met with enthusiasm, and it is clear that continued follow-up and support will be essential in ensuring the long-term success of this initiative. After distributing the official certificates, each leader will be personally contacted to offer further assistance in running table tennis activities within their respective groups. Additionally, Simon Oyler, TTW Business Manager, will arrange a face-to-face meeting to further strengthen the partnership between TTW and the Girl Guides.

Following the North Wales Leader Training session on February 16th, 2025, TTW received outstanding feedback from the participants:

  • “Excellent trainer, well qualified to train us – clear instructions on how we should plan, warm up a session, equipment, safety, & how to run lead-in activities and games. Good information on rules, refereeing, and how to engage a large group.”
  • “The session was really engaging and fun. I love how I have come home with equipment specifically for my unit. I am really excited to adapt activities for Rainbows to be able to engage with the sport.”
  • “The session provided a number of adaptations and ideas which will work well for a variety of age groups.”
  • “It was good to see how to do it by improvising tables. Good mix of activities and learning.”
  • “Very good. Will have a great time trying it out with the girls!”

Adding to the significance of the event, honorary guest Mayor of Wrexham Beryl Blackmore attended the session and expressed her enthusiasm for table tennis. She highlighted the potential to incorporate the sport into Girl Guides certification programmes, further expanding opportunities for young girls to engage in physical activity and develop new skills.

This collaboration marks an exciting step forward in broadening the reach of table tennis in North Wales, fostering an inclusive and engaging sporting environment for young people. TTW looks forward to seeing the impact of this initiative and continuing to support Girl Guides leaders in delivering fun and structured table tennis activities in their communities.
