Charlotte Carey selected for Olympic Qualifying tournament

Carey the Welsh women’s number 1 has been selected in the four-player squad for the European Qualifying tournament event next month in Lisbon. Joined by national coach Stephen Jenkins who will oversee the woman’s squad.

The other players involved are England’s top two players Liam Pitchford and Paul Drinkhall. England number one women Tin-Tin Ho. England men’s coach Gavin Evans will coach the men’s team.

The tournament has been moved from its original venue of Moscow and will now be played in Lisbon from February 10-14.

Rhian Pearce TTW Chief Executive has commented on the announcement “We are all delighted that Charlotte has achieved this chance to compete for Great Britain at this important Olympic Qualifier event.  Charlotte has shown true grit and determination through 2020 and has attained this selection at a really challenging time.  We are extremely proud and look forward to seeing her progress.”

Stephen Jenkins, TTW National Coach says: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for Charlotte to compete against the European and World’s best. Charlotte has been so dedicated during a difficult 2020 period and has earned herself a chance to qualify for the 2022 Olympic Games. I’m sure I speak on behalf of everyone in Table Tennis Wales in congratulating her and making her aware how much we believe in her.” 

“Equally I am very excited about being the head coach for the women’s team. I am confident and looking forward to seeing both Charlotte and Tin Tin compete at the highest level.” 

After the European tournament, there will be a further chance for players who have not qualified to book their places in Tokyo via the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Doha, Qatar, from March 16-19. Further places may then be available via the world rankings.
