Birmingham Day 10 Match Report

STACEY WINS GOLD

 

The penultimate day of B2022 proved to be one that will not be forgotten for many years to come.

Joshua Stacey faced Lin Ma of Australia in the men’s classes 8 – 10 final.  The first set was intense and Josh took the marathon set 25-23 however Ma turned the match around and won the next two sets 5-11 and 9-11.  The atmosphere within the hall was electric and Josh took control and won the fourth set 11-6.  At two sets all it was all down to the fifth and final set.  Josh took control from the outset of the fifth and secured a 3-2 victory and gold!

The defeat of Ma gave Josh his first, and Wales’ first, Commonwealth champion!

The gold medal is coming home!

 

 

Anna and Charlotte returned to the table in the afternoon today to play the ladies doubles semi-final.  Anna and Charlotte faced the Singapore pairing of Tianwei Feng and Jian Zeng who earlier in the day had competed against each other in the women’s singles final.  The Singapore pairing took the first set comfortably 11-5.  The young Welsh pair came back fighting and secured the next two sets 11-8 and 11-9.  The fourth set was very tight but Feng and Zeng once again found their form and took the set 7-11.  During the fifth set the Singapore pairing just didn’t make mistakes and they secured a place in the final with a 3-2 victory.

 

 

This morning Anna and Charlotte will face Xin Ru Wong and Jingyi Zhou to battle it out for a bronze medal.
