How young talent is coming through at Bridgend TTC

As a Regional Development Club, Bridgend TTC represents an important part of the table tennis community in South Wales.

Providing a welcoming environment for youngsters who want to try their hand at the sport, the club has proved a successful base for young athletes in recent times, as well as those who just want to have fun and develop their skills somewhat.

Table Tennis Wales recently spoke to Bridgend TTC’s David Webber, a coach at the club.

“The club has been long established,” he told us.

“It’s important to be part of the pathway for players, and we provide them with an opportunity to progress.

“We have good engagement from young players and new players, thanks to our pre-club training sessions. It’s always great to see new young players taking up a sport that can be played for a lifetime and fantastic to see them progressing and achieving!”

That progression, leading to achievement, has been key to Bridgend TTC’s recent success in national competitions.

“It has a positive impact on the rest of the club and the players,” explained David.

In recent months, the club has produced several medal-winners at national level, including at the National Championships.

“Penny Muil achieved silver at the National Championships, with Stanley Jones getting bronze,” David confirmed. “Alongside Stanley, Frankie Brind and Riley Brookfield also got medals at the South West Primary Schools Championships.”

Those results are important for the players, but also the club and local community on a variety of levels.

“Those results give the club a boost; they justify the work put in by our coaches and the players who practise.

“Medals at the Primary Schools Championships also give the schools a result. It makes pupils feel good and attracts other players to come and try the sport.

“Most of all, though, it’s great to see these young players get a trophy or medal for their hard work and encourages them to play and practice more with us!”
