Day 1 – European Championships

European Championships Day 1

Callum Evans, World ranked 435, had the win of his career today as he beat Hungarian Tamos Lakatos, who is World ranked at 133.

With 300+ places separating the pair, it was role reversal as the Welsh player demolished, German based Lakatos 4/0. Unfortunately Callum couldn’t continue the good form losing his second match to the experienced Lionel Webber of Switzerland (WR 127) 0/4 in the afternoon. Tomorrow a tie with Scotland’s Colin Dalgleish (WR 471) remains.

Charlotte Carey (WR 101) had a battle royale versus the ever present Sara Ramirez (WR 245). The Spaniard just edged the Welsh number one 4/3 after Charlotte came from 1/3 down to level it and take it to a 7th set. In the first match of the day Charlotte beat Scotland’s Rebecca Plaistow 4/0.

To finish the day Callum partnered England’s Maria Tspatsinos (WR 291) in the mixed doubles where they faced Turkish pair Yigenler (WR 278) & Yilmaz (WR211). After trailing 0/5 in set 1 it looked like a tough match was to follow but the British duo fought back to win it eventually 3/1. They play a Czech pair tomorrow.
