A word from our new Chair

Hello, I’m Julian Boyer and I am incredibly honoured to be the new TTW Chair. This is especially so due to the exciting times ahead, as outlined by our General Manager, Rhian Pearce, in her recent General Manager Update. Rhian outlines the host of activity undertaken and underway to improve how TTW operates and so while there is always cause for pragmatism there is also a real sense of optimism for the future.

Who am I? Well I am Newport born and from the Abergavenny area though I have been settled with my family in Torfaen for the last twelve years or so. I am a civil servant who spent some time in the private sector (doing almost anything and everything!) before moving to the public sector. Since joining the civil service, I have worked in operational delivery, employment law/relations, procurement/commercial and organisational development and design. I currently work in the Knowledge, Learning and Capability division for the Office of National Statistics, where I am working on creating learning pathways for the Government Statistics Service professional community.

Why TTW Chair? Who doesn’t love table tennis? I used to be able to more than hold my own on the table tennis table at the youth club, but never really came close to the natural ability my father has in abundance. I still manage to give my kids a game when the opportunity arises.

What do I want for TTW? As you can imagine, prior to my interview with the board I thought long and hard about the current vision, and what this might mean. During my interview, Mostyn Lewis referred to ‘increased performance and increased participation’ and I thought this pretty much covered what I would like to see; ‘Optimum performance and optimum participation’, (where I define optimum as being ‘the best things can be’). For my part I aim to be the best TTW Chair that I can be.

What next? Leading the board through the exciting times referred to by Rhian in her update, helping the board develop to provide optimum performance and see table tennis in wales be the sport of choice for the many, and never for just a few.
